How can I make IE7 always open new tabs to the right?

When I have several tabs open in IE7 with different web pages, and decide to
click on a link in one of them and say "open in new page", unless I watch
closely while the new page opens I can't find out which tab it went to -
there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to where the next tab to
open will be located.

How can I make IE7 always open new tabs to the right?

"Open in a new page" does not a hyperlink in a new tab.

I thought new tabs were always opened on the right-hand side, but in any
case, if I want to quickly check my tabs I just open QuickTabs.

No, they open randomly anywhere, often to the right of the open page, but
with a dozen pages open this isn't always obvious.
What is QuickTabs?

The small tab at the very left - it has four little boxes on it. Read
about it in the Help file or on the web.

Windows version?

CTRL+clicking (or right-click | Open in new tab) on a link in a given tab
should open the new tab to the immediate right of the original tab.

Typing a search term in the Search box and then using ALT+Enter should open
a new tab at the very end of the row(s) of tabs.

I just did 5 new tabs, alternating between http://aumha.net and
http://dts-I.net/, each one opened to the right of the previous one,
not to the immediate right of the original.

CTRL+click and right-click opens a tab to the far right.
ALT+shift +click opens the tab in a new window, as does SHIFT+click.
ALT+click opens new tab to the far right, and shifts focus to that
tab.
CTRL+ALT+click opens to immediate right, and shifts focus to the new
tab.

There's a difference between opening tabs in the background
and foreground.   Try using  Ctrl+Shift+Click  instead and open
multiple links from the original page to see this.

If you are launching pages into new foreground tabs or switching to them
each new tab becomes a new "original tab".

This is what happens: If I just open several web pages in a row they open to
the right of the previous one - that is not my issue.
Let's say I open several web pages, and click back and forth on the tabs
looking through information.  I find a link on one of the pages and right
click - open in new tab.  This tab does NOT open to the right of all other
tabs, it opens somewhere in the middle of all of the other tabs, maybe to
the right of the current open tab, but if all of the tabs look similar (many
are open, so little info shows) it isn't obvious which one just opened.  If
I could set all new tabs to open to the far right it would be much easier to
find the one I just opened.  For that matter I would like to somehow make
the tab for the current open page be more pronounced - the little x in the
tab corner is difficult to see - making the words bold would make it more
visible.
Please explain opening tabs in the foreground and background - I was unable
to detect the difference between Ctrl+Shift+Click and right click, open in
new tab.

We really can't do squat until you state your Windows version (e.g., WinXP
SP3; Vista SP1).

Thank you.

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode?  To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!

3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 *exactly* per the link below (which
automatically returns you to IE6), (b) all toolbars and (c) all third-party
Windows Themes (including Window Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this
behavior persist?  If it does, do NOT reinstall IE7.

Uninstalling IE7
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html
[Only use the Command %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe if you cannot
uninstall via Add/Remove Programs!]

IE7 (Un)Installation and Anti-Malware Applications:

re-Applications.aspx

4. Required reading IMHO before reinstalling IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then
STOP
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install

I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Direct Download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9ae91ebe-3385-447c-8a30

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

5. Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered.  If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

I've been using IE8 and was forgetting that IE7 already has the feature
you want.   I agree.   It's my preference too.  ; )

In Tab Options  _uncheck_:
Open new tabs next to the current tab
(Keystrokes:  Alt-T,O,Alt-t,n)

> For that matter I would like to somehow make
> the tab for the current open page be more pronounced - the little x in the
> tab corner is difficult to see - making the words bold would make it more

Even then the tabs can get so small that they only contain the first letter
which isn't enough to differentiate them.   In that case I like to use the
Tab list  command  (Ctrl-Shift-Q).   In it the full title of current tab is both
bolded and checked.

> Please explain opening tabs in the foreground and background - I was unable

Not right-click,  it's  Ctrl-LeftClick.   BTW it's in the Help.  ; )
Press F1  Alt-S  and Search for:  foreground AND background
Article:  Using Internet Explorer Keyboard Shortcuts
Item:  Working with tabs

The only thing that the article doesn't make clear is that the
meaning of foreground and background in the explanation
are reversed depending on the setting of  Tab option:

Always switch to new tabs when they are created
(Keystrokes to toggle:  Alt-T,O,Alt-t,A,Space)

Thanks for helping me find the settings I needed - I was feeling that I was
asking too much of the system, but your explanations were invaluable.
Thanks

Ctrl+Shift+Click is the one combination I didn't try, but does open to
the right of the current tab.
