Hello, MSN and Other programs connect to the internet and work just fine. I
can still Chat on MSN and download on Peer-to-peer clients. But Explorer
won't connect. also, When I try to update windows it tells me error code
80072EFD. But i reasearched and found Microsoft says it is a Firewall
blocking it. I ONLY HAVE WINDOWS FIREWALL! When I did get to the internet
before it would tell me I'm not the administartor, I'm the only user. I know
that they do this when installing windows at Dell. is there a way to make me
ADMIN and the only one?

Any help with the connecting to internet issue.

Should have got a MAC

Windows version is...?  IE version is...?

Could be something other than the Windows Firewall (which, I'm sure, would
not be causing the problem). See...

You may receive an..."Error 0x80072EFD"...error message when you try to use
the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site:

Vista, IE version 7.0.6001.18000. Can't update vista so lets say its the
version out of the box.
Firefox works so I guess I'll use that browser, But the update, man the
windows updates won't work, the microsoft pages tell me its firewall , OK, No
firewalls installed.
Then it says to go to the update site, but can't update in Firefox.
update site says click on start menu and click on windows update, well there
we are back to the error code. Or Proxy, well no Proxy sever here. Auto
detect settings.
Did the "Click Start, click Run, type notepad
%windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts, and then click OK."

...Well long story short, thank you for the site PA Bear, but I did
everything it said and still nothing from IE. any other Ideas?

Your IE version tells me that you have Vista SP1 installed.  Assuming Vista
SP1 did NOT come preinstalled on the machine:

Did you install Vista SP1 via Windows Update or did you install it manually?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these appplications running when you installed Vista
SP1?

Is your machine still under Warranty or Service Contract?

Thanks PA Bear,
If SP1 did not come installed then I guess it did work before, I do Remember
doing it but sure lets say I did. I have AVG installed, I had Norton but that
came with the laptop and only had like a free trial so I uninstalled it when
the trial was up. I have Ad-aware anti spyware, NO other firewall. All Virus
scans and spyware scans come clean.
Still under warranty but I don't really want to lose it for a 5 weeks

I can get to the update site and click on the link for SP1 but it tells me
I'm not the admin (but I guess I have SP1), How do I become The admin?

any help is helpful Mr. Bear

thanks Dezzy

Please quote my entire post when you reply, Dezzy.  Thanks.

Repost: Did you install Vista SP1 via Windows Update or did you install it
manually?

Was AVG (anti-virus) andor Ad-Aware's "guard" service running in the
background when you installed SP1?
==============================
The above notwithstanding:

1. If "LiveUpdate" is listed in Add/Remove Programs, uninstall it.

2. Download & run the Norton Removal Tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

3. Reboot twice.

4. Can you run Windows Update manually now?

5. Is Internet Explorer working now, or do you (still) get a "Page cannot be
displayed" error?
