I have Windows Vista home premium.  I could type an address into the address
bar and the page would immediately go there but if I typed anything into the
search bar, it would NOT move.  It would also skip letters as I was typing.
I was battling with it for days.  I found the pages that repeatedly suggested
I try all of the following:  start IE without add-ons, delete browsing
history, run antivirus, malware, etc. software and check for bugs, uninstall
all antivirus software, and lastly, using the advance tab under internet
options - reset IE settings.  I tried ALL of these things, plus I turned off
my firewall, etc.  I even downloaded internet accelerator tools, etc.

THE END RESULT:  I WENT TO TOOLS; INTERNET OPTIONS; CLICKED ON THE SECURITY
TAB; AND UNCHECKED THE BOX THAT SAYS "ENABLE PROTECTED MODE" WHICH OF COURSE
TURNED IT OFF - NOW ALL WORKS GREAT!!

I would love to know if anyone else has encountered the same problem and if
so, if this worked for them too.

So, if your problem symptoms were being caused by some malware
which was finding it difficult to operate in the more restrictive environment
you just opened it up to make things more convenient for it?   <eg>

I guess that's just what I did.  I have Norton 2008 installed on my computer
and hopefully that will take care of any potential problems.  (I also just
re-installed it thinking maybe that would have been the problem as so many
people in this group say it is).  On another note, I did every scan possible
for malmare, hijacking, spyware - you name it.  I followed every recommended
website everyone suggested in this community and still, turning protected
mode off was the ONLY thing that made it start working again.
