DEFIANATELY GENUINE SOFTWARE AS IT CAME PRE-INSTALLED WITH THE LAPTOP

ok, got an awful feeling it may be malware....... thing is, when it first
started happening i found out i did have a virus that my anti virus program
could not fix. So i formatted the computer, sent it back to acer for another
problem and got it back. It is still coming up with the error message.
I have scanned the computer and found no virus, and no threats on it.
Could it be that the original virus has remained?
I feel like i've tried everything and nothing is working!!!!
If it is malware, and formatting the computer failed to remove it, can it be
removed at all???

With Acer's preload or did you reinstall other things?

How do you reload after formatting? This looks as if whatever you are
reloading is incompatible with your OS and IE.

I sent it back to acer literally the day i re-formatted, so it was the absolute basics i sent it back with. Their advice was to check the modem cable which i did and there are no problems, its brand new.
I have tried running IE without add ons and it still does it, so i'm not
sure its that either :(
Have installed service pack three, and that hasn't done the trick.
its really starting to get frustrating!!!

So, that suggests that something from Acer could be causing it.

Running without add-ons is just a convenient way of eliminating *most*
sources of interference when you are trying to identify a cause of a problem
symptom. There are lots of other possibilities that can still occur even
in that mode. The problem then is that you have to resort to traditional
clean-boot troubleshooting techniques to figuring out what they are.
For example, you could next look at your msconfig startup list... <eg>

Installing updates when you have undiagnosed problem symptoms
present, especially ones which are suspected as being caused by
third-party interference, is not a good idea.
Good luck
