What exactly do "stopped working" and "cannot get it to start again" mean?

Could your computer be infected?

"Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software"

Please define "stopped working."  Is this sudden, new behavior?

Vista or Vista SP1?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed?  What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?  What third-party firewall
(if any)?
