since installing IE7 - history is not storing websites visited. It does
however store things like documents I've opened under My computer.

I have days set to 20. Have tried deleting history and reset options.

I have Windows XP Pro SP2, IE 7.0.5730.13.xpsp_gdr.070227-2254

Mcafee personal firewall (supplied by AOL)
AVG 7.5
Ad-aware 207

Just looked thro Windows updates and it says (for ie7)

05 June Installation Failure Error Code: 0x11

07 June Successful

It was installed via Windows updates

Run...  (e.g. press Win-R and enter:)

   shell:History

Then copy that window's Address bar.   (Alt-d,Ctrl-c)

Then switch to a cmd window (aka Command Prompt window).
(e.g. Run...  cmd.exe)

and type but don't yet press Enter:

   cd  /d

Make sure there is a trailing space on that line and right-click, Paste.
Then press Enter.

Then enter:

   cd  History.IE5
and
   find  /i  "Visited:"  index.dat

Depending on the date and time you do this you will see pages that
you opened that week.  You posted using the web interface on a Sunday
so I can't tell which time zone you are really in but since it is now Monday
if you haven't visited any more pages in the new week you may not see very
much from that command for a while.   You would see more by drilling down
further into (for example):

cd  MSHist012008061620080623

but then unfortunately the items in that directory's index.dat don't have
that  Visited:  eyecatcher on them, so you have to search for a more specific
eyecatcher:

find /i "2008061620080623"  index.dat

(e.g. the same date range as the directory you are in or the directory name
without the  MSHist01  prefix.)

Thanks for replying. I followed all that and got :-

When I entered   f ind  /i  "Visited:"  index.dat
I could see webpages I visited including ones today

When I entered cd  MSHist012008061620080623
and then  find /i "2008061620080623"  index.dat
it just came up with the similar as shows when I show history in IE7 that is
just a list of activities don such as documents opened.

Now what do I do ?

Compare that with what the  Ctrl-H  History views give you.
Sounds as if your History is working properly.

One explanation which would explain a scenario of having visited "some"
web sites on the days the range includes would be that they were all
to encrypted sites using the  https  protocol.    That protocol seems not
to be included by  History.

Otherwise you could look in the TIF, listing it in order by Last Accessed,
and make a list of sites you visited during that period, manually.   E.g. I think
that even if you only visit secured sites which are otherwise excluded from the
History, if it includes both secure and non-secure content and it is cached,
you could get some clues about a visit to a secure site that way.   There is
a related  Security  option in the Advanced tab
Do not save encrypted pages to disk
but I'm not sure what all the consequences of using it are.

NB: I

You may have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7.  I suggest that
you...

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

NB: Before you uninstall and then reinstall IE7 (#1 and #3 below), (a)
disable AVG Anti-Virus, (b) disable Ad-Aware's "Guard" service, and (c)
disable the McAfee firewall AND THEN enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: Only use the Command %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe if you cannot
uninstall via Add/Remove Programs!

2. Uninstall any/all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including
Window Blinds) via Add/Remve Programs.

3. Reinstall IE7 EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install <= Steps #1-8, #10 &
#11; take note of #12, then STOP!

NB: Use http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Or Direct Download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9ae91ebe-3385-447c-8a30
-081805b2f90b

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

4. IMMEDIATELY go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any
critical updates offered.  If a "Root Certificates" update is listed in the
Optional category, install it to take full advantage of IE7's additional
security.
