Syd - 24 Jun 2008 07:13 GMT It won't let me do a new question, but it will allow me here.......go figure.
All of a sudden, around June 7, my system (I guess) stopped writing cookies. Most sites( 2 or 3 are okay) require that I log in each time I visit it. This has never happened in the past.
I have gone to Tools and Options and made sure it is set to allow cookies I even put some sites in the Always Allow section, but, it's not working.
No idea what has changed to cause this problem.
Help

PA Bear [MS MVP] - 24 Jun 2008 21:15 GMT What changes did you make to your (Windows version?) machine on/around 07 June-08?
One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking". These include but are not limited to Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer, SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, AVG Anti-Spyware, Norton AntiVirus, McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware, NOD32, and Zone Alarm (Free, Pro, & Security Suite).

[quoted text clipped - 13 lines] > > Syd Syd - 24 Jun 2008 22:58 GMT I think...........that an auto update from MS happened around that time, but, can't remember and have no idea what...............I have since turned auto update off. I don't run or have any spyware, but I do have Norton..........again, it could have changed, but, I have looked at Norton and cannot find any area that I can turn Cookies on or off? Most of this is Greek to me............. I do have Java and Active X on my PC...............IF there are any areas where I can change options other than Tools and Options please let me know. I have done everything I can think of, even setting the LOW security to allow anything. EVEN this site, when I put in save email and password, it does not........I have to key it in everytime.

[quoted text clipped - 22 lines] > > > > Syd PA Bear [MS MVP] - 24 Jun 2008 23:10 GMT No updates were released on 07 Jun-08. A batch were released on 10 Jun-08. At this point, it looks like your Norton application might be the culprit here.
I would NOT recommend disabling Automatic Updates (AU). AU has options other than "Automatically download & install updates." One of the other options might suit you better. Assuming WinXP, see...
How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525
What is your Windows version, anyway?

Syd - 24 Jun 2008 23:30 GMT I set the auto to notify me, not just auto load. I have windows XP I think service pack 2. As I say everything was running fine until 2 weeks ago...........there are 2 sites that I do not have to put my password in, but the rest I do. Even my banking sites up to now it would keep my card number and I would just have to put the password in, now, it keeps nothing. Even when I tell it to keep my card number there, it does not. When I say June 7, it could have been the 10th, it was around that time. If it's Norton, do you know where I go in Norton to find those options?

Syd - 25 Jun 2008 23:38 GMT I sent a message to Symantec and Microsoft, still waiting for an answer. I diabled Norton to see if that was the problem, but, the problem still exists.
I could not find any options in Norton that had anything to do with cookies..........

PA Bear [MS MVP] - 26 Jun 2008 00:00 GMT Simply disabling Norton /whatever/ (e.g., NAV; NIS; N360) may not be sufficient, Syd. The behavior might be caused by a Norton Add-on.

IF I had not just bought a new PC last October, I would chuck it and buy new, start over...........however, I guess I will just have to live with it and keep signing in, it's a pain, but, not the end of the world.
Syd - 28 Jun 2008 01:03 GMT You can tell I don't have a clue...............since I went to Google and had to sign up, now this site is showing my email address.................bloody hell MS................I have heard nothing bad about Apple............maybe I should get over my fear of change and go with it. I understand they have a stable system, easy to use. Anyone know for sure?
Grrr.......................

Syd - 29 Jun 2008 15:33 GMT I just posted a reply to a message before I realized it was from 2006.............
FIREFOX, it said it's better than IE7, faster, writes cookies and does not require anything like freeware or shareware etc. for it to run............is this still true, can this be loaded and used and just leave IE7 as it is, and don't use it anymore?
Any help would be appreciated.

PA Bear [MS MVP] - 29 Jun 2008 16:03 GMT You are certainly free to use FF or any other third-party browser as your default.
Unlike third-party browsers, IE is part-and-parcel of the Operating System and has more dependencies. Just make sure you keep IE fully patched (even though you may not use it).
Also note that many IE features will not work in other browsers without some tweaking and plug-ins (e.g., Windows Update).

Syd - 28 Jun 2008 06:28 GMT I just got a reply from MS............however what I never liked about getting reponses from MS, they try and tell you to do something............never telling you why. OR, what they think the problem is to begin with.
They want me to create a system restore point and then reset IE 7, they mention something about this being best to do before installing SP3, but, don't say anywhere how I am to install SP3, or WHY,,,,,,,,,I may not fully understand this stuff, but, I always want to know why I am doing something.
If my system gets screwed following their suggestions, I don't have A. anyway to email them, no system and B. I can't afford 2 or 3 days downtime while they get back to me.
I will say, I have not had all that many problems with MS, but when I do, getting help is worse than pulling teeth.
It's like the guy that sells you something, takes your money and runs.................
As I said before, I think I am just going to have to live with this problem, until I run into someone that actually knows what they are doing (not me) or, take it into the shop and get them to start from scratch...........
Thanks anyway.................
