Both of us running XP SP2 with latest IE 7. He consistently gets a
variety of malware/spyware and other strange things. I've helped him
clean up his computer several times and some of the malware is very
difficult to remove. He uses the IE popup blocker.

Example-He goes to the main myspace page(www.myspace.com), after a few
seconds a new page opens promoting something to buy. He gets various
"warnings" that his computer is infected and he needs some program to
clean things up, but the program is a hoax too, you have to pay.

Differences? I have  a router, he does not. He uses Windows XP
firewall. I use the MVPS host file, he does not.
We both have Avast antivirus running.

Any suggestions would be appreciated(in group only).

Hi John,

MVP's host file. This will stop him going to known malware and adware sites
by accident.

Also compare your Internet Security settings - Tools>Internet Options,
Security tab, and your lists of Trusted and Restricted Sites.

Use the Default settings for the Internet Zone, for your banking sites you
may like to add these to the Trusted Web sites Zone.

Regards.

"Ultimately, the only protection against phishing, forged Web pages,
downloading malware, and other threats is the technology located between
the user's ears."
