Actually, it looks like you may have been unable to in KB950759, not IE7.

> ...i am running xp home sp3(i reinstalled
> windows and there is only one user on this computer)

In order:

1. CrystalBall© sez...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

2. Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then
STOP!
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install
(ignore any references to Vista)

And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Alternately, use this Direct Download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9ae91ebe-3385-447c-8a30
-081805b2f90b

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
installing IE7 and install any critical updates offered.  If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

are you sure KB950759 applies to me, i doubt because i formatted the whole
system and then installed xp. also i dont use automatic updates, i usually
download them myself. previously i had done the same, i mean earlier i had
sp2 and i downloaded the file(ie7 installation) and installed it, it worked
fine, but since the system was infected with a virus i formatted it and
reinstalled with sp3. now i am using the same file to install ie7 but i am
unable to do so. should i download the file again?

> Actually, it looks like you may have been unable to in KB950759, not IE7.

KB950759 is a critical security update for all currently-supported versions
of IE, so yes, it does apply to you...as do several other critical updates
which were released after WinXP SP3 was released in early May 2008.

I'd strongly recommend installing IE7 using a fresh download of the
installer and per #2 in my last reply.

Do you understand that Automatic Updates has settings other than
"Automatically download and install"?  See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525.  If you select the Notify Only
option, you'll be informed of available updates which then can
download/install manually from the Download Center.
