Admitedly, I'm a IE newbie having spent most of my browsing life using
Netscape and FF. Therefore, the questions I post may appear too simplistic to
even answer but I ask them only after an ernest attempt to find the answer
myself. Having said that:

When I go to yahoo.com for my mail all the icons that display properly in FF
show as empty white boxes in IE?

Using any ad-blocking software?
Anything for Yahoo listed in your hosts file?
What sites, if any, are listed under the Restricted Sites security zone?

Hi:

Using any ad-blocking software? No. I have Norton 360 but it does not
prevent popups.

Anything for Yahoo listed in your hosts file? No. The hosts file contains 2
localhost entries: 127.0.0.1  & ::1

What sites, if any, are listed under the Restricted Sites security zone? None.

(Quoting attribution line and indentation added due to poster commenting
inline with my content rather than in his own added lines.)

So what happens when you disable everything Norton?
