Dumb question. In IE7 under Tools-Inernet Options-Accessibility if I select
any of the formatting option boxes why would these affect any other
applications? Specifically Outlook 2002 (I know it is no longer supported)
HTML message preperation. It seems that the IE7 setting can over-ride the
Outlook settings and prevent the user from making any changes. I've also
tried IE8 Beta and it does the same thing among many other problems. Real
pain until I found out IE7 was apparently causing the problem. Just
curious....

My guess would be that the reason is because all versions of Outlook (prior
to Outlook 2007) use the IE Rendering Engine (mshtml.dll).
To be more precise, all versions of Outlook prior to Outlook 2007 use two
engines. The IE engine is used for viewing HTML in Outlook, and the Word
engine is used for editing HTML in Outlook.

Thanks for the speedy answer! The link for the Trident layout engine was a
big help since that article points out several other applications that IE
might interact with unexpectedly. At least now I am aware that options in one
program can and do affect other programs even though the really shouldn't!
