Status bar error, multiple IE7 errors

in recent months, Internet Explorer keeps losing more and more functionality
without explanation or provocation, and I cannot uninstall and reinstall to
start fresh.

-The status bar exists at the bottom of the window. However, when I scroll
my cursor over a link, nothing is displayed until AFTER the link has been
clicked on, which is a very big problem. I cannot understand why this has
happened, nor can I find any sort of function behind it.

-Certain functions no longer work properly. Although I'm unsure of the exact
process name, in certain web pages, clicking on a thumbnail of an image
changes the thumbnail to the full image it's linked to within the webpage.
Recently however, in many of (but not all) of the websites in which I use
this process, rather than changing to the full image within the web page, the
thumbnail acts as a link to the thumbnail by itself rather than simply
changing to the full image in the web page. This greatly annoys me as it is
an important part of my work. I have checked this process with different web
browsers, to which the process of changing to the full image works like it
used to, however I dislike all these other browsers and would prefer to
continue with IE7.

-Several web pages (typically ones with many thumbnails) take MUCH longer to
load in IE7 than they would with a different browser, up to 5 minutes for the
page to load at all. This started happening about a month ago.

Does anybody have any idea what could be causing these problems? If not,
does anybody know how I could ahold of someone who WOULD know how to fix
these issues?

I know of three causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. You might have incompatible add-ons:
Go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools
and click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings.  Read this
article first:
How to use Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES):

Note that the Reset IE Settings button will delete AutoComplete data (such
as passwords.) Do you have those backed up?

3. Malware already installed on the computer:  Help with malware

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author.  See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything.  Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along.  Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
