Good day
I am using OE 5.50 (...) and am in a second round of trouble managing
the DBX files for OE. OE is creating a second file for some folders:
Deleted Items (1).dbx
Deleted Items.dbx
That is just an example, it is happening in other (but not all) groups.
The trouble is that the posting history is then lost in the new file.
I can't go back to earlier posts because the new file (the one w/ (1))
does not contain the messages/headers from the original file.
The last time this happened, I removed all files out of the directory,
re-subscribed to all the groups and re-created all the folders, and let OE
create them new, and then copied the old files back into the directory.
But that is more work than I'd like to do. I want to find what the cause
is to help avoid that, and also now that its happened, how can I
re-enstate the old files? I only have 2 or 3, and don't want to re-subscribe
to all the different groups for 2 problemed folders.
If I delete the duplicate (1) file it just re-creates it. It simply will not
use the original file! I want to keep the original files intact, as you might
know folders like Drafts, cannot be downloaded again because they did
not originate from the net.
So;
1. What caused OE to use the new names?
2. What can be done to re-use the original files?
3. Can they be merged?*
*I may not notice this right away and may use the new folder some time
before I notice that earlier messages are missing. When I go looking for
an earlier message I need to find it, and as it is, they are not accessible!
I would hate to have to rig up some way of saving all the new posts as text
and then manually add them back into the old folder, just to have a complete
record....
On a side note, does MS supply a DBX viewer? If I had a tool like that, I
could just let OE do its thing and save the old files in an archive directory.
When a search is needed I would then use the tool to look through the archived
files. Of course if OE is using the new name because the old DBX is corrupt,
then having some amount of recovery/repair included in the tool would be needed...

Most common cause of this (corruption in the DBX files) is having the option
to Compact Messages in the Background turned on in OE's menu,
Tools/Options/Maintenance. We've asked MS to stop making that the default
and they've advised they will do that in the future. In the meantime, you
and any other user should disable that option and instead compact manually
while working offline as outlined here:
