Why do many messages come in  with a clip symbol in the Inbox line, but
there is not an actual attachment.  When there is an attachment, the clip
also appears in the top of the preview window.   Thanks.    Ted

Several things can do that.

- AVG 7 set to scan e-mail can cause there to appear to be phantom attachments
- If you set Tools, Options, Read, Read All Messages in Plain Text, HTML format messages
appear with an HTML attachment
- vCard (business card) attachments appear that way

Frank:

Think he's referring to the Columns in the Message Header List.
