Hard drive crash

XP, OE 6 but I have not backed up my data in months (everyone can now shake
thier heads, smile and say "idiot" all at once  I deserve it).  My HD is not
totally toast, but it is dying and I may still be able to grab the .dbx
files and address book from that drive.

So I put in a new HD,  reinstalled OE again with new messages and a new
address book.  I may be able to grab my DBX files and adddress book from my
old HD, I have not tried yet as I don't know how to proceed relative to
blending in my old DBX files and address book.  Unfortunately, I was using
Outlook at the time of the crash and the address is buried somewhere so I
have to find that.

Any advice on how to proceed from here?   The DBX files are important but
the addy book is more important.

Thanks in advance
Rob

SInce you've already created a new Outlook Express on the system, do not try
to jjust copy the old DBX files and Address Book to the new setup. It won't
work that way.

If you do recover them from the drive, use File | Import instead.
Create a temp folder such as C:\OldMail
Copy the DBX files and WAB file to it from the old drive.
File | Import | Messages | Microsoft Outlook Express 6 | Import from an OE6
store directory
Press OK then press Browse and navigate to the C:\OldMail folder, select it
then press OK and finish up the Import.

For the Address Book,  File | Import | Address Book and select the old WAB
file and import it.

Now, if Outlook was used as was set as the default for Contacts  and email,
you will need to hunt up the .PST file used by Outlook. You will also need
to reinstall Outlook on the new setup, import the old messages File | Import
and Export | Import from another program or file | Select Personal Folder
File  then work thru the rest of the import wizard for it.

Once there, you can export only the Contacts as a Comma Separated Values
text file that Outlook Express's Address Book can import.

Thank you, that makes sense.  Now that I see your email addy, I think I'll
break down and buy your back up program.

Buy it? It's free unless you seriously want to make a donation, well that's
different <G>
