It takes over an hour a day to DL all my spam. OE 5.5 doesn't seem to give
me the option to delete messages from the server (Earthlink) before DLing.
Even though "delete from server" is one of the options, all rules start with
the line "Apply this rule after the message arrives" and I can't change it.
I have read about the virus that created this mess:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.swen.a@mm.remova
l.tool.html
But I never ran any of the attachments and I have no reason to believe that
my computer is affected. These emails are coming from elsewhere and I can't
stop them. They're clogging my box so that the server deletes those over
the limit. Help, please.

Some things to note about the Outlook Express version 5+ Message Rules:
- Message Rules only work with POP3 server accounts. (For Hotmail set the rules on the
Hotmail web site.)
- "Apply this rule after the message arrives" text is not significant
- The Actions "Delete from Server" and "Do Not Download" can only test information in the
message header (FROM, TO, CC, SUBJECT, message size). If you test text in the message
body or "has attachment", the message must be download first for this test, negating the
action. Also, these must be the first rules in your list, or a preceding one may cause
the message to download. (Warning: "Do Not Download" should be a temporary rule. If you
just leave messages on the server, eventually your server mail account will fill and
you'll not receive any new mail.)
- The order of rules is significant. Rules are processed in the order listed.
- In most cases, you want to check the "Stop Processing" action on a rule, otherwise a
subsequent rule may override this one.
- There is no wild card support (e.g. * or ?). However, matching is done based on the
specified string appearing anywhere in the field. The matching is Not case sensitive.
- To match on multiple terms (e.g. "blue" and "sky" rather than the phrase "blue sky")
you have to ADD the terms one at a time to the rule (i.e. enter the first word, click the
ADD button, then enter the second term, click the ADD button, etc.)
- For switching between NOT, AND/OR logic, click on the OPTIONS button for the condition
- Blocked Senders is equivalent to a message rule of where FROM contains the name with an
action of Move to Deleted Items folder and Stop Processing. All Blocked Senders are
applied before the other Message Rules.

I have the same problem 60-80/day. They stuff my email
box. I go to Mindspring and delete them there. can you
explain how to stop them in laymans terms.. PLEASE.
Norton catches them but it takes forever to down load e-
mail. My freind uses Eudora and doesn't have this
problem. Is the solution to throw outlook in the crapper?
Chuck.

Does your ISP offer any filtering on the mail server?
With my ISP I've put filters on the mail server so that the virus messages get routed to
the trash folder there and OE never sees them so it doesn't need to download them.

Chuck,
I seem to have put a stop to the downloading of most of them by setting up an email rule to delete, from the server, any email over 100KB in size.
When you've set up the rule click on it,to highlight it,then click on MOVE UP repeatedly to move it to the top of your list of rules.
Of course this rule will be of no use to you if you normally receive emails of this sort of size that you actually do want.
To set up the rule I did this.
I clicked on TOOLS/MESSAGE RULES/MAIL/NEW.
Then I clicked on the box,in Section 1,next to WHERE THE MESSAGE SIZE IS MORE THAN SIZE to select it.
Then I clicked on the underlined SIZE and typed in 100 and clicked OK.
Then I moved to Section 2 and clicked the box next to DELETE IT FROM THE SERVER,to select that option.
Then I clicked OK then OK,on the next page,to create the rule.
Then I clicked on that rule,to highlight it,then kept on clicking on MOVE UP until that rule was at the top of all my MESSAGE RULES.
Then I clicked on OK again and that was it all done.
