I had created a profile in Outlook Express for temporary
use so that I could get a certain piece of mail.  The
account was a POP account so it downloaded a whole bunch
of mail.

When I was through I went through the process of deleting
the account.  (it still had 37 pieces of unread mail
sitting in the inbox)

Now everytime I log into Windows XP it shows that I have
37 pieces of unread mail for an account that is no longer
on the system.

Does anyone know how to find the cache and delete this?

I went into the Local Settings/ApplicationsIdentities/
folder and tried deleting the keys there but to no avail.

Any advice would be appreciated... thanks

How can I remove the unread-email counter from the Windows XP Welcome logon
screen?

If your computer belongs to a workgroup and you use the
XP Welcome logon screen to log on to that workgroup, the OS will display the
number of unread mail messages on the logon screen. To disable this feature,
perform the following steps:
                     1.. Start a registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe).
                     2.. Navigate to the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
subkey.
                     3.. Double-click MessageExpiryDays (or create a new
value of type DWORD if MessageExpiryDays doesn't exist), set the value to 0,
then click OK.
                     4.. Close the registry editor.
