Password screen gets covered up

Lately my OE has started opening like this: The screen comes up asking for
the password, but only for a split second, whereupon the main screen for my
identity shows up (displaying my inbox and usable without having entered the
password yet), and then I have to minimize that to get to the password
screen under it, and then restore the main screen.
Previously I didn't have it password-protected, and it's such a pain as it
is without all these extra steps...
Is there something I'm doing wrong?

That doesn't sound like the OE Identity password (which is optional), since if that were
the case, you shouldn't be able to access the mail folders.  But you can check that in
Files, Identities, Manage Identities,

That could be your mail server password, which the mail server requires.  See if the
following apply:
