A post to an IE5 newsgroup for IE6 may not get the correct response
but it is my impression that it is not on the advanced tab with XP
(Sorry, I don't have an XP installation)

Try my notes:

Desktop icon
Win9x:
IE-Tools-Internet Options-Advanced
Check "Show Internet Explorer on the desktop"

For XP:
Control Panel-Display Properties-Desktop tab.
  Customize Desktop

A better newsgroup for WinXP would be
news://msnews.microsoft.com/micrososft.public.windowsxp.newusers

Right click a blank spot on the desktop and choose Properties.
Click the Desktop tab.
Click the Customize Desktop button.
Check the box for Internet Explorer.
