Import/export WAB files

I'm confused by file sizes of WAB files.

First I delete every record from my address book. Then I import a WAB file
that is 1.5 MB and has 2000 records. Now my address book has 2000 records. I
then export every record in the address book to a second WAB file. That
second file also has 2000 records, but it's 4.1 MB in size!

It seems to me that the 2000 records (only name email address) should need
only 100 KB or so.

Does any one know what's happening.

Is MS Office or MS Outlook also installed?

Yes, MS Outlook AND Office (Small Business Edition) are also installed. In
particular, it's called  "Microsoft Office XP Small Business." All of the
programs in the suite have "2002" after their name.

Do you have this Registry key?...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
   \Software
         \Microsoft
              \WAB
                 \WAB4

If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook and is its value set
to 1 (one)?

If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with
Outlook, even if you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office).
Change the value to 0 (zero), Address Book should be available to you and
all should be well.  (If that DWORD is not present, don't create it, and
don't alter any other DWORD values.)

Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.  This may be bad news for you.

There was no DWORD named UseOutlook. There were 3 DWORDs, but none implied
Outlook. (FirstRun, etc.)

It seems so strange. I import a 50 KB CSV file with 1400 Name and Email
records into a totally empty WAB. The resulting WAB file is OVER 1 MB, or 20
times larger. I can import a WAB into a WAB and the resulting file is 93
MB - still with 1400 records.

Thanks for trying PA Bear.

Are you running a McAfee or Norton application in the background, Bob?

Does the same thing happen if you import either the CSV  or WAB file into a
new (empty) Address Book (Start>Run> wab /NEW)?

I am not running McAfee or Norton. I uninstalled Norton about 2 months ago.
My ISP has a very good virus protection screening program for all email. I
realize that I can still be struck by a virus, but the performance hit
caused
by Norton is not worth it, IMO. Norton hadn't caught even one virus in the
last six months it was on my computer. I attribute that to the virus
checking in my ISP.

What a GOOD site. Thank you.

After  Run Wab /Open

I see three WAB files. I expected to see just these three.

But when I Search on all *.wab files, it shows about 10 other wab files,
located in "My Computer" with no size and no modified date. (I'm not talking
about those in /recent) They have names of wab files that I used and then
deleted. Is it possible that info from these old, deleted wab files, is
somehow getting into my exported wab file?  A long shot.

When I start from a new WAB (run wab /open), import a CSV, and then export
it, (like you
suggest above), my csv is 50 KB, and the wab is 859 KB, but that's OK. It
took about 1 second to import the file from a CSV file. Subsequent exports
of the file, (sons) and also exports from the exported files (grandsons)
still remain at 859 KB. All records seem to be under Contacts.

Next I went to my "Bob.wab" (Main identity) and deleted all records. Now the
file is only 2 KB. Next I imported the same CSV file. After 90 SECONDS ???
the new wab contained the correct information, and correct number of
records,  1417. All records showed up under Shared Contacts. Why's that?

When I tried to use search to find the size of the new Bob.WAB, only my test
wab files, that were in the recycle bin, showed up.  So I then REBOOTED and
searched again.  Now all the wab files show up, and my new Bob.WAB is 94.2
MEGA Bytes.  When I export this huge Bob.wab to a New.wab, the resulting
file is also 94.2 MB.  With this large WAB, performance on OE has slowed
down.

I am having problems with Outlook. That's one reason I'm using OE.  Is it
possible that an Outlook problem is causing this OE problem?

This problem all started when I was trying to decide which email program I
wanted to use. I now use Eudora Pro, but I'm getting a new computer soon and
want to move to Outlook or Outlook Express. All 3 programs are on my current
computer.

I'd also like to be able to delete all those WAB files that show up in the
My Computer folder when I do a Search *.wab.  Is it possible that deleting a
wab file leaves some information on the computer?

Thanks for you help.

I'd imagine the install of Outlook has created this problem, Bob.  Though
you post to an OE5.5 newsgroup, I now see you're running OE6-SP1.
Copy/paste the following line into an IE Addressbar, click on GO, then
copy/paste the results into your reply:

   javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

Also state your Windows version, the version of Office/Outlook you'd
installed and if you've uninstalled either Office or OL.

I'm using XP Home Edition, version 2002, SP1

I believe at one point I tried to uninstall Outlook. Then I tried to
reinstall it. I'm using Outlook 2002 (10.4608.4219) SP-2, from Office XP
Small Business.

Should I uninstall Office XP Small Business, then reinstall it from the
CD...then reinstall SP-1 and SP-2?

After doing a search for all *.wab files on my C: drive, it showed the 3 WAB
files that I expected PLUS 28 WAB files in the "My Computer Folder". For
those 28 files there was no Size, Type, or Date Modified information....just
Name and "In Folder."

I recognized the names of these 28 WAB files as being files that I had
previously deleted. So I re-deleted each one (right click...delete) directly
from the Search output screen. The I did a search again, but this time those
28 files did not show up. Yeah.

Then I went back to OE, deleted all records from the file, and re-imported
the sample CSV file with 1400 records. Next I exported that WAB file to
another WAB file. Voila, the new WAB file was only 3.2 MB....far less than
94.2 MB previously obtained with this action, although still quite a bit
larger than I might have expected. (I believe I've seen other WAB files with
1400 records that were only 800 KB).

This implies that something strange is going on when a WAB file is deleted.
When I delete a wab file (the second time) from the Search screen, I'm
asked:

"Are you sure you want to delete History Item:
WIWA%20address%20book%202
(WIWA%20address%20book%202.WAB)?

The name of the file is/was "WAWA address book 2.wab"

Hope this helps.

My current problems are:
this is still too large a file (3.3 MB)...something is being included in it
"behind the scenes"
I still have Outlook error messages. Something's wrong there.
