Slow to open folders

I do hope this is the correct newsgroup and someone can help.

Is there a program that might check the integrity of the OE folders - I have
been having a problem with folders slow to open - some taking as long as
three minutes - or not responding - Scandisk shows no problem.

Now a friend is having a similar problem with OE 6 - no virus apparent.

Please help!
