O.E. opens all highlighted mail

Hello,
When mail is received the message is opened just by highlighting it. I
double click to open attachment etc. How can I change it so the message is
not opened or changed to double clicking to open. I can not delete any mail
without it automatically opening first.

OE menu, View/Layout and uncheck "show preview pane."
