Suppose I have two browser windows. I have just sent a mail in the 1st
window. Since the mail takes some tome to go, I start working in the 2nd
window, maybe logging in to some site. As soon as the mail is sent, the 1st
window becomes active and comes on top, interrupting whatever I was actively
doing in the 2nd window. Hwo to stop this?

Depending on your operating system, upgrading to IE6 may be an option.

I use IE 5.5 at home, but elsewhere I have noticed the same thing on other
versions of IE. Do you think that this doesn't happen in IE 6+?

It doesn't happen to me in IE6 with XP.
I see the icon on the taskbar change from blue to orange (colours will
vary) when the window is trying to be active, but it doesn't take
precedence. This is not a guarantee, as it may vary with operating
systems. What o/s are you using?

I can do limited experiments if this is important to you.
I can try it only with IE6 but on Win98, Win ME and WinXP.
I have no machines left where IE5.5 is the highest version allowed.

Not that important, just annoying. I am using win ME with IE 5.5. I'll try
this out next time I use IE 6+. Thanks all the same.

OK. I would not use IE5.5 on Win ME due to security reasons but I can
check in Win ME +IE6 if you wish. Let me know, as I don't often use my
Win ME machine.

What's this about security? Please elaborate.

Ok, since you have a ME system, check for it in IE 6. Thanks.

IE 5.5 has quite a few security holes that have been patched in IE6 SP1.

There are security features in IE6 and OE6 that are well worth the
upgrade.

Web sites find it harder to hijack your system; your home page cannot
be changed by a web site without your permission; attempted background
downloads of spyware by web sites will often trigger a warning box;
cookie control is enhanced; the ability to view emails and newsgroup
messages in OE in plain text makes webbugs in spam a thing of the
past.

I checked Win ME with fully patched IE6 and I cannot reproduce your
problem with unwanted windows becoming active. YMMV.
