You need to have "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins" enabled, or choose prompt
before running. I think it is about the fourth item in the security settings
list.

Without knowing which settings were "messed up" it's a bit hard to pinpoint your
problem. To troubleshoot, right click on a pdf file you have stored on your
computer and choose "open with". You should have a choice of Internet Explorer
or Acrobat Reader. Try each of those. If it will open in Acrobat Reader, but
not in Internet Explorer then something is probably messed up in your plug-ins
for your browser. You might try using System Restore to role back to an earlier
time before you "messed up some settings" and see if that fixes the problem.

1. Exit from IE or AOL.
2. Start Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
3. Choose Edit > Preferences.
4. Select Internet in the list on the left.
5. Select Display PDF in Browser, and click OK.
6. Restart IE or AOL.
