Up until day before yesterday, I was working with CuteFTP 5.0.4 XP for uploading files to web sites.  One currently working on and uploading new pages, etc.  Worked with it all morning!

Then when I tried to connect in the evening to upload a couple of new items, no connection (connection failed).  I was able to connect to Tripod for my own web site.  I tried disabling Windows Firewall since doing that previously helped.  Not this time.

Checked off the box marked PASV which also worked last time I had this problem.  Not this time.

Reinstalled CuteFTP - still no connection.  Now none of my web site connections (I have 4-6 of them set up in CuteFTP) CONNECT!

Any ideas?  I need answers QUICKLy!

Cynthia, most probably the server of the website provider is down.
Since you say you re-installed Cute FTP and after the re-install no connection works anymore, I
think you need to either uninstall and re-install once more, or redo all the data for all individual
ftp connections.

Most of the time when a connection fails, the server of the website provider is temporarily down, in
total or partly.
Waiting a few hours often is the one and only trick !

thanks, Helen.  THis is an issue of which I am very much aware.  I was able to connect via Tripod's filemanager after logging in at their web site.  Tried accessing http://www.korksoft.com which is my client's web site host but "page cannot be displayed" - I had a friend (online at the time) try it and she got the same result.  Since I have not been able to access the host server for 2 days now, I believe something is happenign on their end, but it could also be SP2 RC1 updates.  I have considered uninstalling RC1 (installed from download) and reinstalling it from CD Microsoft sent to me.  That may fix a few things.  My original beta 2 of this SP2 which was installed from download presented me with all kinds of freaky problems.  When I installed from CD I didn't have any of those problems, so I am suspicious.

I am trying to zero in on the problems by process of elimination now.  Whatever the reason for it, it's driving me bonkers because I have critical web site updates needing to be uploaded and not being able to do so frosts me!

I uninstalled RC1 and I was able to connect to the web site server using Cute FTP.  Does that tell you something?

It must have been an update that did it.  I am going to reinstall from CD this time and make sure that my updates are PROMPTED ones from now on

glad you worked it out!
Any idea if this was one of the latest 5 MS updates that did it??

I had release candidate RC1 installed with updates done automatically - testing certain features and had to have it that way.  However, I uninstalled it (it was installed from a download from their beta web site) - In the meantime I had received this on CD which is a much safter method of installation (preferred method as far as I an concerned).

Was able to connect with no problems at all.  I am going to now see if I can connect to their web site and see what happens.

Meantime, I will reinstall RC1 from CD and monitor things from there.  If still same problem it will be uninstalled again.  I cannot afford to be dealing with "bugs" and "fruit flies"! <G>

Sound like one of the last three hotfixes for RC-1 Cynthia.  one of these
had
to do it.  Try to figure out witch one...If you click in add and remove show
updates you should be able to remove the one that is stopping cute-ftp from
working then do a bug report to MS and to cute-ftp Cynthia.

All is well again! <smile>  I knew there had to be an answer. I have set up my updates to cue me before downloading and installing.  No more auto updates after this.  I honestly do not know which one of the "hotfixes" fried me.  I will report it to Microsoft just the same.  CuteFTP knows about it already

I attached a *.reg file that was suppose to fix one of those problems.  It was a beta tester but not sure in which group of testers.  I don't have that key on my SP2 RC1 but non-public betas might. I have not tested ftp login on WinXP SP2 RC1.

thanks for the file, Greg.

Strange behaviors with RC1. I have both versions 5.0.4 XP and 6.0 Home of CuteFTP

Tried connecting just now with version 6 and got timeouts.  FIred up 5.0.4 XP (Windows firewall is disabled) and the doggone thing connected in the blink of an eye.  Uploaded my files.  Closed the program.  Fired up version 6.0 and it also connected now.  Go figure! <G>

Computers - you can't live with 'em but you can't live without 'em!

here is the current scenario on this issue.

I have both CuteFTP 5.0.4 XP and CuteFTP 6.0 HOME installed (version 6 is upgrade)

If I have the Windows firewall enabled, I cannot connect to this particular web site server (korksoft.com) but when I disable it, both work fine.

I did have 5.0.4xp working with the firewall enabled before the problem occurred a day or two ago.  I swear it was one of 3 hotfixes dumped to my computer but cannot be certain without checking the installation history log.

In the meantime, I have to disable firewall in order to access this particular web site server.  I do not think it's a problem with Tripod - will check, however.

I installed the 5 Critical Updates yesterday and I can connect to 2 different sites using the ftp://userid:pw@www.somesite.com format and they worked fine with Zone Alarm firewall.
