When I started my system this morning I found that I had lost months of
email in one specific folder.  Some emails remained in the folder, but most
were gone from a certain date on (emails organized chronologically).  During
my prior use of the pc I recall two maintenance related activities:  1. I
was prompted to "compress" my emails and did.  2.  I optimized my hard drive
using Norton.  Could either of these events have caused the loss of my
emails?  I can find no evidence that the emails are on the pc anymore.

Are you talking about compacting your message store or compressing files on
the hard drive?  If compressing, what program did you use to compress the
files and why?

For missing mail, see this link for some possible help:

As for the use of Norton, most OE users will tell you it does little more
than create problems.  You might consider finding a less intrusive product
for virus protection, but that's your choice.  In any case, you should
disable scanning of incoming email since that is the major offender.  Your
protection will not be decreased one iota, since any attempt to open an
infected file will prompt an immediate warning from your antivirus product
(assuming you keep it updated).
