When sending email with pdf attachments I'm getting an
error message "the message could not be sent. An error
has occured"  And the message dies.  It is an
intermittent problem.  However I can send any and all
attachments when using Comcast's email engine.  Can
anyone advise?

When you get such an error, click the Details button and post the first two
lines of the error message.  Although it sounds as though you are attempting
to use a mail server to send that you are not presently connected to.  Many
mail servers will deny access to their SMTP servers to send mail unless you
are authenticated with them, either by doing a POP before SMTP or by using
the authentication options on the Tools/Accounts/Mail tabs for the account
involved.

The problem is that there is no details button.  The
entire error message is "The message could not be sent.
An error has occured".  It gives no other details other
than it happens when sending attachments. I can send
email without attachments but it fails with them.  The
POP and SMTP settings are correct as is the attachment
file size.

Couple of things to check.  Can you send a message to yourself with an
attachment?  Does it arrive with the attachment intact?  Are you using an
antivirus program to scan outgoing mail?  If so, remove that option from the
antivirus program.  Are you sending these messages via an ISP that you are
connected to and have been authenticated to use their SMTP server?

Last, can you telnet to the SMTP server involved?
