Can't type message into Outlook Express or into internet explorer

I installed IE6 and Outlook Express yesterday. Now I
can't type anything into the message box, the format
button freezes the entire program so I have to exit it and
all the formatting tools are greyed out. In IE, I can't
enter any information on website that require fill-ins or
passwords. How do I fix this?
