Hi everyone
I've seen some posts about this but can't resolve my problem. I have XP Pro
SP2 and reinstalled the OS recently from the recovery disc. Every time that
I startup now, OE6 opens but I don't want it to. I had no problems prior to
the reinstall. I've looked in the usual places - all of the startup
folders, msconfig, registry (in run, runonce etc), win.ini but there's no
trace. I don't have Outlook installed but will probably do so at some
stage.
I've noticed that, when I go into IE>Tools>Internet Options>Programs, OE is
listed as the e-mail program and Hotmail and MSN are also listed. I tried
changing this and, when I tried to use Hotmail and rebooted, it said that
there was a .dll missing (I can't remember which one). I changed it to MSN
and rebooted. A dialogue launched immediately relating to MSN so I think
the problem's arising because Outlook Express is set in IE as the e-mail
program. There's no option of having no e-mail program.
How do I disable this as I don't want Outlook Express to open every time
that I turn the computer on?
Thanks for your time.

What kind of Internet connection do you have? DSL, dial-up, etc.?
Are you connecting to the Internet at start up?
Does Internet Explorer open at start up?
Did you install any software from your ISP? Some ISPs install a connection manager that
can be configured to start various programs (such as your browser or mail program) as soon
as an Internet connection is established.

Hi Michael
I have ADSL and connect behind a router.
I do connect to the internet as soon as I start up and MSN runs at startup.
It connects automatically when there's an internet connection.
I haven't installed anything from my ISP.
I have an update about this matter: I did a further reinstall of the OS
from the recovery disc. I upgraded to SP2 via the MS disc which I received
today. I haven't connected to the internet so know that I don't have any
malware. Every time that I started the system, everything was fine. I
uninstalled Norton AV (which came with my system on the recovery disc) and,
as soon as I did and rebooted with Admin rights, Outlook Express started
automatically! If I rebooted with Limited rights, Outlook Express didn't
start automatically!
It seems that the problem's arisen because of this - any ideas how I can
disable OE starting like this when using an account with Admin rights? I
don't want to use Norton as I prefer McAfee.
Thanks for your input.

Nevertheless, that is probably where it originates, perhaps being started
by a proxy command that you don't recognize or understand.
If you'd like to capture your list Run... (e.g. press Win-R and enter:)
msinfo32 /category SWEnvStartupPrograms
press Tab, Ctrl-a, Ctrl-c and paste your result somewhere for further
analysis.

Hi Robert
Thank you for the advice. I checked the Sony website and loaded some
updates. I checked whether the abnormal behaviour had resolved and, after
updating the BIOS, everything's been fine.
I'm not sure why the problem developed in the first place, unless it's been
some conflict which developed after downloading other routine updates, such
as Windows Updates, SP2, McAfee VirusScan etc. If so, I doubt I'll ever
identify the exact cause.
