I want to export my address book to another computer.  I seem I have 2
address book data files.  When I go to tools/options it gives me 2 choices-
to share or not share.  When I chose not share I get one data set and the
other when I check the other.  When I check to share-in the address book I
what to export-import/export are grayed out.  I can export the one-but my
latest and active info are on the other.  Please help-any info would be
helpful.

Open the Address Book that you want to move to another computer | Help |
About Address Book will show you the path to it in Windows Explorer.

In WindowsXP & 2K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start>Control Panel>Folder
Options>View.

Right click on the correct folder and Send To a location on your HDD. (My
Documents or Desktop is fine). From there, copy it to CD or Floppy. In the
new computer, copy it to the HDD. Open the Address Book and File | Import |
Address Book and browse to the location where you saved it.

When this sharing is enabled, you're giving permission to share Address Book
contacts with MS Outlook (even if you don't use the latter) and Address
Book: File > Export is grayed out because Address Book is actually "pointing
to" Outlook contacts (in either a PAB file or a PST file, depending on the
version of Outlook installed).

Any changes (additions, deletions, edits, including groups and folders) made
while sharing is enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book
when sharing is disabled.

Long story short, to export the complete data set you want, you'll need to
export if from Outlook, not Outlook Express.  And if you want to import this
data into OE on a WinXP machine, export it only as a TXT (CSV) file.

I have the same problem with the import/export options greyed out in OE 6.
The "sharing" that is referred to in the previous messages, is that found in
Outlook or OE? I cannot find the choice of to share or not to share on
tools/options: which program do I go to and which tab within that selection
will I find that option?

And /your/ Windows version is...?

Is MS Outlook (or MS Office) also installed?

Do you have this Registry key?...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
   \Software
         \Microsoft
              \WAB
                 \WAB4

If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook (NB: no space) and is
its value set to 1 (one)?

If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with
Outlook, even if you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office).
Change the value to 0 (zero), Address Book should be available to you and
all should be well.  (If that DWORD is not present, don't create it, and
don't alter any other DWORD values.)

Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.

OK, I saw those inquiries in a previous response to this string.

Windows version: WinXP Home w/SP2
Is MS Outlook installed: yes, Outlook 98
Do I have registry key.....?  Yes, and changing the value does fix the
problem,
and thank oyu very much for that.

But I'm still curious if this "sharing" can be turned on/off from
tools/options
menu item of iether OE or OL98 as aluded to in the response string?

No, not in OE6 SP1 running in WinXP SP2.  (Some have said this was dependent
on the version of OL installed but time and posts to these newsgroups have
proven otherwise.)
