This morning when I compacted all folders I got a message that folders.com
"is currently in use by Outlook Express or another application".

I have tried renaming folders.com and rebooting, but the same message keeps
occurring when I compact. This persists even when I close all other
applications.

Can you guys help me please?

It's Folders.dbx

Do the Following:

File | Work Offline
NOw compact
File | Folders | Compact All

Do this a couple of times and restart OE then try it one last time.

If it still shows in use, locate Folders.dbx and rename it to Folders.old
and then restart OE.

Thanks for your reply (.com on the brain).

Solved.  My ISP recently introduced a spam reporting system (see
spammatters.com/html/index.php) - runs in the
background as EXPRESSIA.exe - I terminated that and compacting proceeded as
usual.

It's hard to see what people have installed from here at times :-)
