Please define *customer* and *internal email*.

Are you networked?

Do you receive multiple copies of e-mail from outside senders?

Id this a POP3, IMAP, or Hotmail account?

If you are networked, that may be the culprit, but give this a try.

Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced. Uncheck: Leave a copy of
messages on the server. Then delete the Pop3uidl.dbx file. You will get the
messages one more time, but that should be it.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in
Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Pop3uidl.dbx}
and delete it.  A new one will be created automatically when you open OE.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

[Might IMAP be involved here?]

Do you have multiple mail accounts in Tools, Accounts, Mail?

If these are alias accounts pointing to the same Server POP3 account
(They have the same settings at Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties,
Servers for both Incoming POP3 server AND Incoming Account Name) and you
have selected to Leave A copy on the server (Advanced tab), then each
account can download a copy of the message.  In that case, on the
General tab, only one of these accounts should have the "Include this
account" option enabled.

If you have only one POP3 account,  the  POP3UIDL.DBX (OE5+) file may be
corrupted.  This is used to track previously downloaded messages when
you leave messages on a POP3 server (Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties,
Advanced).  However, the file gets updated even if you aren't leaving
messages on the server.  Delete the file with Outlook Express or
Internet Mail closed.  (On Win2000 you need enable the display of Hidden
or System files in the folder options and XP you need to use the
advanced options to find Hidden or System files.)  The next time all
mail on the server will be downloaded.  But after that the file should
function correctly again.

One the chance you are running the older OE 5 (see Help, About Outlook
Express)

If you read the paragraph of my original post (see below), where it
starts:

If you have only one POP3 account

It will tell you what to do.
