Ever since installing SP3, I get frequent messages to compact.  I've read all
the threads, and can't find any evidence of a solution yet.  Does anyone know
of a solution?

See this recent discussion about the problem:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general/browse_fr
m/thread/fcd35fbfa457fd6f

For reference, here's a list of things which are known to cause this
behavior:

 • Various & sundry anti-virus applications (including Norton)
 • Various & sundry anti-spyware applications
 • Various & sundry third-party firewalls
 • Any/all of the above running when SP3 was installed
 • IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLL
 • Nero plug-in(s)
 • Windows Desktop Search
 • Windows Live Mail
 • Disk defragmentation
 • MailWasher

Millions of OE users have installed SP3 without encountering this behavior
after doing so.  I know kos I'm one of them and I've installed SP3 on over a
dozen machines.

Not that MS will be interested but...

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada.

I heartily agree...

SP3 was an excellent Microsoft job.

No Problems Here.

The SP3 Development Team should give remedial lessons to the VISTA and WLM
Teams.

You need to state your problem more clearly and describe your system.

Fair enough.  Before installing SP3, I got the compacting message about once
a month and compacted.  Now I get it every three days or so, and once it
comes up, I get it every time a send an email.

System is XP Home with SP3.  What more do you need to know?

The compaction frequency can be adjusted:
Tools, Options, Advanced, Maintenance, "Compact the database on shutdown
every xx runs".

I can't find an "Advanced" option tab, nor any place to make the change you
suggest.  What am I missing?

It stands for Windows Live Mail (previously known as Windows Live Mail
Desktop).

Unfortunately, the original post is no longer available on my news
server, so I don't know whether whether the problem occurs with Windows
Live Mail or with Outlook Express (or both).   [NB  Whilst it is
permissible to snip irrelevant content, inclusion of previous posts is
helpful in subsequent replies].

This thread has been cross-posted to Outlook Express and WLM newsgroups.
The previous advice relates to WLM - not OE6.

Michael Santovec - 07 Jul 2008 18:46 GMT
That setting is for Windows Live Mail (WLM).

If you are using Outlook Express (OE), that setting does not exist.

This thread is cross posted in both OE and WLM newsgroups which is
causing some confusion.

As for the prompt, it should only occur closing OE.  Are you opening and
closing OE each time you send a mail?  Or you are sending messages from
another program such as IE or Word?  IF so, is OE closed when you do
that?

Millions of users may not have encountered this behavior, but I have,
numerous people on this site have, and you've provided a list of potentially
conflicting things that may cause this problem, including the most widely
used anti-virus app - Norton.  That hardly makes MS look good.

Now that I have that off my chest, does anyone have a solution instead of a
lecture?

People are always pulling some asinine claim out of their hip pockets that
NORTON is to blame for their woes -- as a convenient whipping boy.

My experience has been that NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2008 is an EXCELLENT
product and well-worth the price -- as have been previous versions.

The problems occur when pogues and poguettes attempt to load cheap and
ill-designed freeware on their computers, don't upgrade MS products
regularly and fail to use GOOD, SOLID software that has been tested by
Symantec and vice versa.

Then they have only THEMSELVES to blame.

I presumed the above list would be self-explanatory.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed?  What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?  What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these applications running when you installed WinXP
SP3?

Are you using an IBM Rapid Access keyboard or is the file RAKDLL.DLL present
on your machine?

Are you running one or more Nero plug-ins?

Is Windows Desktop Search installed?

Is Windows Live Mail installed?  Was it ever installed?

Have you run Disk Cleanup and then a Defrag session since you installed SP3?

Do you use MailWasher?  Do you use any other anti-spam
application/filtering?

Is your anti-virus application configured to scan incoming/outgoing mail?

OE File | Identities | Manage identities: Are you using the default "Main
Identity"?

Have you opened a free WinXP SP3 support incident about this?

Using Norton AV and firewall, plus Microsoft Defender anti-spam.

All were running when I installed SP3.

Not using anything else on the list you provided.

Haven't run the Norton equivalent of Cleanup and Defrag since installing SP3.

Anti-virus does scan incoming and outgoing email.

I don't know how to determine if I'm "using the default "Main Identity"".

I have opened a support dialogue with MS - no help.

NB: Please do NOT crosspost any more replies to your thread to the Windows

Working backwards:

> I have opened a support dialogue with MS - no help

Doesn't surprise me.  See my first reply to this thread.

> I don't know how to determine if I'm using the default "Main Identity"

OE File | Identities | Manage identities: Is "Main Identity" the only one
listed here?

> Anti-virus does scan incoming and outgoing email.

Disable it ASAP!  It provides no additional protection, it's known to cause
corruption (e.g., loss of OE messages; the compacting problem you've
encountered since install WinXP SP3) and even Symantec says it's not
necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

I said nothing about any "Norton equivalents" of these WINDOWS utilities:
Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | ...

> Using Norton AV and firewall, plus Microsoft Defender anti-spam.
> All were running when I installed SP3.

Defender is an anti-*spyware* application, not an anti-spam application.

NAV and Norton Personal Firewall should have been disabled (and the Windows
Firewall *enabled*) prior to installing WinXP SP3. [1]

If the Norton application is a 2008 version (i.e., Norton Internet Security
2008; Norton 360 2008), things could be more problematic. [2]

I will have some suggestions/recommendations after seeing your next reply to
this thread.

Overheated...

I had no such problems.

NIS 2008 and XP Pro SP3 are perfectly compatible.

I still don't understand how to find the OE File and look to see if "Main
Identity" is the only one listed.  Could you provide more information?

I have disabled Norton  scanning for incoming and outgoing email.  Currently
the Compact Check Count in the Registry increases by 5-8 increments a day,
even though I only open and close OE6 once or twice a day.  I'll watch it and
see if it's better.

Do you want me to run Windows Scandisk and Defrag?

You wrote:"Defender is an anti-*spyware* application, not an anti-spam
application."  OK, my mistake.  Does it matter?

NAV and Norton Personal Firewall were not disabled when I installed SP3.
That's a done deal.  Now what?

Norton products are 2007.

In the main OE window, click on FILE | IDENTITIES | MANAGE IDENTITIES...

Or use the keyboard shortcut ALT+F+D+M

Of course!  Sorry, I thought it would be more complicated.  Main Identity is
the only one.

Then given the fact that you don't have any of the other applications I
cited earlier installed, you may have a "horked" install of SP3 because NAV
was running in the background and/or the NPF was enabled when you installed
it...

...or the Main Identity may have been damaged by NAV's Email Scanning.
(Please leave Email Scanning disabled permanently.)

First let's see if the behavior persists if you replace Main Identity with a
new user-created identity.

1. Create a new named identity (File | Identities | Add new identity) &
configure your email account(s) in it.  Name it anything other than Main
Identity and don't even use the word "main" in it; do NOT rename the Main
Identity!

2a. Compact all folders in the Main Identity;

2b. Import all messages from the Main Identity into the new one*; and then

2c. Open File | Identities | Manage Identities | and REMOVE the Main
Identity.

Now strictly adhere to all of the caveats I posted earlier and use your new
identity for a few days, then tell me if the Compact Count still behaves the
same way.
