Problem upgrading Internet Explorer - 15 Oct 2004 04:37 GMT
When trying to upgrade from 5.5 to 6.0 SP1 I get the message "Setup unable to
install all components. Try running Setup again". When I run it again I get
the message "A previous install has pending work requiring a reboot" and this
goes in circles! The Update web site keeps saying I need to install this
"critical" update, and when I click the link to view all the updates, it
tells me that 6.0 SP1 has been installed 4 times! Control Panel/Add-remove
programs does not show Internet explorer.Version 5.5 continues to work. Can
anyone help?  Thanks

If you're running WinME, try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee

I followed the link and went thru the steps but the download never starts.
Any suggestions?

If you're running WinME, have you tried this?

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee is absolutely correct in his posting but I wanted to embellish an
important point a little more.

I had a client with this exact issue a little while ago on their Win ME
system and the fix outlined below allowed the IE 6 SP1 to install correctly.

However I recently had another client with this problem and Windows ME and
so I just did the same fix from memory and happened to leave out an important
step. The problem with doing it wrong was that it yielded exactly the same
error message and this leads to the assumption that there is something else
amiss.

It turns out that the IE6Setup does not create the "C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information" folder if it is not present.
So my incorrect fix of just moving this folder to the desktop not only didn't
work but didn't work in precisely the same fashion as before I'd done
anything.

I created an empty "Uninstall Information" folder and everything worked as
advertised.

I thought I should mention this for those who were sure they'd done the
right thing from memory only to find there is an important distinction
between moving/removing the folder and just emptying it.

Cheers.

TD,

You're correct.

The workaround is moving the contents and not the folder.
;)
