Using IE 6, if I'm at a web page and click on something that would
ordinarily bring up a picture or video player, etc., instead I get an
empty window that's titled About:Blank.  Quite annoying.  I've tried
all the so-called fixes at Microsoft re this problem except for paying
them for a hotfix.  In your dreams!  I've changed security settings but
it didn't help.  Also made sure no popup blockers were interfering.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Grant,

two thinks to look at here....

    1) Tools > Internet Options > Temporary Internet Files > Settings >
View Objects

All add-ins there should be installed. If not look at removing
and reinstalling.
Also malicious BHO will install here also so carefuly look through
and see
if there are any problems here.

     2) Have you thoroughly scanned your system for Malware and virus as
they
are know to do things like this or cause these problems when partly
removed.

Windows Defender can help with this along many other programs.

     3) If these don't work there is one other think to try:

         Start > Run > Cmd

                regsvr32 /s urlmon.dll

Thanks Frank but I've already done all that but it didn't fix anything.

Hello Grant,

Wow, if you have tried all of those than I'm stupped too.  I sure you have
cleared all the temp file then too?

There is one other thing to look at have you checked the file association
values for webpages?

I have seen the problem with graphic also and need to look at that to see
if it can cause similar problems.

Everything with file associations looks okay to me unless I'm missing
something.  I don't have trouble visiting any web pages - it's after I
get there and try to open something listed at a site that gives me the
new window titled About:Blank instead of what's supposed to open such
as a catalog picture or video player.  Like if I go to Napster I can
navigate the site just fine but if I try to listen to a song it pops up
in an empty About:Blank box.  If I use Firefox the song plays just
fine.  Same thing with shopping at stores - the actual site is fine but
sometimes if I want to look at a particular item or a larger view of
the item, it doesn't work.  Not every site does this - just some.  So
I'm thinking that sometimes the way the "code" is written for that new
window is somehow being blocked or not recognized by IE.  I've tried
turning off popup blockers but it doesn't help.  Temp files are cleared
out daily.  No spyware or trojans, etc.

I don't know if you found a fix for ie. yet, if you didn't try
http://kelleys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm  and scoll down to #260 for your
blank in ie. address bar, good hunting. WEB JR

No, I haven't found a fix yet.  Tried several things suggested at MS
but no luck so far.  The kelleys-korner link doesn't work for me.  It
does take me to their site but if I search for tweaks, it brings up Bug
Doctor or Registry Mechanic.  Even if I manually type in your link, it
just takes me to an index page with topics, all of which bring up
different scanners or software.

Fixed!  Frank was on the right track with file associations but I
missed looking at the js extension.  It was assigned to Netscape
Navigator.  why I have no clue as I've never installed or used it but
maybe some other software included it?  Anyhow, after changing js to
open with IE, all those popup windows now open properly instead of that
about:blank garbage.  Thanks!
