Andy,
For the 1st problem, clearing the Temporary Internet Files cache (from Internet Options General tab) solves the problem is most cases.
For the download problem: Enable the "confirm open after download" option for that filetype (.zip):
Open Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Type tab
Scroll down to locate the file type. Highlight the filetype (Zip / WinZip) click the "Advanced" button.
Then check the option "confirm open after download".
If that does not help, let us know if you're using (used earlier) any the download manager utility.

Hi, I seem to be having a strange problem in IE6 with
images & various downloads. Whenever I try saving an
image, gif, jpeg,, etc. it keeps saving as bmp only. I
can't save any animated gif's as a result. I have no idea
what's going on as all was working fine the other day. I
haven't installed any software for some time now so I'm
confused! I am also having problems with zip file
downloads. It never comes up with winzip, just a blank
window with any zip file I try clicking on. I have to
right-click and go "Save Target As..."
Any help would be much appreciated and e-mails are as
above but remove NO_SPAM off the end.
Thanks, Andy Mitchell.

I do indeed have a download manager. I have Download
Accelerator Plus V 5.3.9.8 (Registered) but have browser
integration turned off. When I turn browser integration
on it catches the downloads fine.
IE6 has never had any problems downloading stuff before
so I'm still lost as to why it's started now.
And thanks for the image saving problem, worked fine.
Also fixed another problem I had, couldn't view the
source for any website page!

I'm having the same problem with saving graphics in
anything but bmp format. I have cleared my cache, but it
had no effect. I had this problem once before and
remember an article on the Microsoft Knowledge Base that
explained how to resolve this through a fix of some kind
to the registry. I guess I didn't save the article and
can't find it now on the Microsoft site. Can you help?
