Windows Explorer works, Internet explorer does not..

After accidentally downloading a bunch of ad ware my browser stopped
working. The status bar on the lower left of the explorer window would
rapidly and endlessly cycle through addresses without anything getting loaded.

After running an anti-sppyware scan and removing ad ware files an
Internet Explorer browser window now issues "Cannot find server or DNS
Error". But the weird thing is that from a Windows Explorer launched via
right-clicking on Start programs | Explore, I can load any given page. And
that browser will work fine until a link launches a new
browser (rather than load the new page in the same browser). The new browser
will fail to load the page.

Any ideas on what I might need to do to fix the problem?
   Thanks,
   Lew.

Hi Lewl :-)

Removal of some types of spyware can damage the Winsock keys in the
Registry.  To correct the damage and repair the IE connection, download and
run the following programs below:

LSPFIX

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

and..

Winsock Fix Utility

WinsockXP Fix for XP

(scroll down the list to the lsp.dll files here)

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps
