IE6 Information Bar annoyance I have a local html homepage on my C drive at: C:\Eugene\home.htm or file:///C:/Eugene/home.htm IE6 understands either of these address formats fine, and displays the local homepage like it would a website page on the internet. So, when I click the home icon on the toolbar in IE6, it goes to my local homepage. However, occasionally I get an unwanted Information Bar at the top of the homepage screen which says: "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer. Click here for options..." This doesn't usually happen, but happens immediately after I have visited certain websites which use special content such as frames, scripts, .xml, ActiveX, etc. I believe there is zero risk with my local homepage which only uses simple html code. It is simply a list of the URLs that I visit frequently. It is 100% text, no graphics, no images, and has no external content from any other source. It has zero active content, no ActiveX controls, no scripts, no java, no javascript, no frames, etc. So I believe the Information Bar really should not appear here, and is probably an IE6 error. I have tried many times with different formats, with and without wildcards, etc, but have been unable to add my local homepage to the Local Intranet or Trusted Sites security zones. It always says I have entered an invalid wildcard pattern, etc: At this point, my best hunch is to add some kind of code at the top of my local home page which kills all active content (such as scripts, frames, etc) which are somehow being carried forward from the prior URL that I visited. I don't know exactly what kind of code would be needed, so could use any help in that regard. How can I stop that unwanted, unnecessary Information Bar from appearing at the top of my local homepage? I don't want to turn off the Information Bar completely, just for my local homepage. This seems like a minor annoyance, but over the years it has grown larger after having clicked off the unwanted Information bar thousands of times. I've discovered (on a different NG) that the cure is under Internet Properties, Advanced tab, Security, check the box to "Allow active content to run in files on My Computer". That stops the unwanted Information Bar from appearing on my local home page. Unfortunately it's a security risk. I'm not a security expert and don't know how big a risk it is. My guess is it's small, because I've never seen this happen with anything except my local homepage. Of course, better would be to somehow permit active content from my one innocent harmless local homepage file, but not from any other file on my computer. Is there any way to do that...? After considerable reading and consultation with tech experts, I'm now fairly convinced that this is the most practical solution. SP2 introduced "local machine zone lockdown" which is the cause of this problem. I'd also advise checking the box for "Allow active content from CDs to run on My Computer", which is more likely to work properly with CDs, particularly pre-SP2 CDs. I found some commercial CD producers who had major gripes in that regard. Another option is to switch to a different browser, maybe one of the "advanced" browsers. For example Firefox doesn't have (nor need) an Information Bar. I've also heard names like Opera and Safari mentioned. Some big players (big corporation websites, such as banks) are starting to recommend them because of problems with keeping their websites compatible with the constant changes IE. Renaming the local homepage file with .hta extension brings it up a featureless window without a menu, toolbar, command icons, status bar, etc, not an ordinary IE6 page. Also the links on that page are inactive. Clicking the links won't goto any websites, which is the only purpose of having a local homepage. The Mark-of-the-web idea only works, in general, if the file or URL has already been added to a security zone previously. But as I explained in my original post, all attempts to add my local homepage to the Local intranet or Trusted sites security zones have failed - because that syntax is not accepted.
