What is changing my IE browser starting page?

Hello,
For the second time in a week my IE (ver.7) starting page has changed to:
"Sign up for Windows Live Hotmail" page.
The address displayed:
http://bl102w.blu102.mail.live.com/mail/LoginError.aspx?error=31&mkt=en-US&ru=ht
tp%3a%2f%2fbl102w.blu102.mail.live.com%2fmail%2fTodayLight.aspx%3fn%3d62637975%2
6gs%3dtrue

I had my browser starting page set to some other address.
Now, it looks like this:
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&pver=6&ar=msnhome

I did not authorize that change, neither installed any new software which
could do that.
Any thoughts?

If you change the homepage to www.msn.com, does the setting stick when you
close/reopen IE?  When you reboot?

It might be a security program blocking the Registry change it needs to
make.  A few, but not all, of the programs now doing this are:
Ad-aware's Ad-Watch
IBM Access Connections
Kaspersky
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware
Norton AV
Spyware Blaster
Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Spysweeper
Spyware Doctor
Windows Defender
Zone Alarm (free) 6.5 Reported to be fixed in later versions.

In the case of Zone Alarm 6.5 or Norton 2007 it actually has to be
uninstalled.  Make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on until you
reinstall Zone Alarm.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and try the change.

Does anyone know why the default homepage for IE6
(http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&pver=6&ar=msnhome) now goes
to a Windows Live Hotmail login screen? Why doesn't it go to MSN anymore?
This confused some of my customers.

A. Nony Mouse,

Same here.  We have been experiencing the same issue (Users' homepages
pointing to the Windows Live sign on).  It seemed to me that Microsoft
had redirected where that link (http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/
redir.dll?prd=ie&pver=6&ar=msnhome) goes, however, when pasting that
link directly into the web browser we get the expected homepage
(MSN.COM).  The only other thing I can think of is if I pushed out a
Windows update to their computers using WSUS that is causing this,
however, I haven't been able to track it down and no one really has
anything posted on Google about this yet.

My experience is that even when I manually open that URL in IE, it goes to
the Windows Live sign on page. Occassionally, it goes to the MSN home. I
haven't figured out the rhyme or reason for it. I don't know why MS hasn't
noticed it.

I know this has to do with MSN, but, by chance, do you have
'Automatically check for Internet Explorer updates" ticked in
Tools|Internet Options|Advanced Tab| Browser catagory??

I usually untick that 'feature' , but for some reason I reticked
it last week... getting download page for Silverlite as my Home
page when first opening IE7.  I unticked that 'update' feature
and no more "ads" from MS.

Offhand... it's interesting how much information just 'happens' to be
vented outward of one's computer when using IE7.
A. Nony Mouse - 09 Apr 2008 03:53 GMT
"Automatically check for Internet Explorer updates" is not checked.
Incidentally, when I initially opened my browser, it went to the MSN home
page. Closed it and re-opened it, and it went to the Windows Live Sign In
page.

Is your site still filled with that nasty pornographic material you so
proudly claim to have created?

Why would anyone want to download something from your filthy site?

I've already checked my own IE settings and there is nothing out of the
ordinary. My browser hasn't been hijacked, nor have the numerous other
systems I checked. It's a problem with the redirector URL that is the default
home page for all clean installations of IE6:
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&pver=6&ar=msnhome

I looked at your homepage fix and found a number of mistakes. Here's a
corrected version of iefix.reg based on IE6 (since this is the IE6 forum).
Note that variables should be expanded by a batch script in the creation of
this reg file; do not use this reg file directly:

This Message is for Greg

I am not an IT Professional "Least not yet..." ^ _ ^

But I caught the same Virus That Highjacks your IE Browser
Changes your Homepage to (
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&pver=6&ar=msnhome)
and pops up adds and such, First thing you need to do is Disable any
unnecessary Active X Controllers and IE 6 or 7 Addons (To do this go to TOOLS
and then INTERNET OPTIONS then PROGRAMS and MANAGE ADDONS...
Once you Disable any Suspicious Addons you can access your Browser by doing
the following, I used www.yahoo.com and I only opened Cached Webpages...
Before this all happened I was updating Virus Definitions, Cause I got
Paranoid...lol Went to C-Net of all places, Clicked Download...Then Server1
or 2 and It actually Brought me to a Cloned AVG Webpage, With a Microsoft
Certified Active X Download...I clicked it and then BAMM Pornography Adds
popped up and CMD Processes started up, and I amediately Closed them all out
with Alt+F4, My Windows Time went to Military Time and Said "Virus Alert"
Desktop went to Blue Screen with Yellow Box saying something like Warning
your computer has been infected by Spyware, and it went on and on about
downloading "Premium Anti-Virus" Software such as Antivirus 2008 and such,
and Downloaded 3 Http Shortcut Icons that could not be removed from the
Desktop...Sound Like your Problem? My Start menu was still blank, I can't get
the program files to show yet, but the C:/ Drive issue hidden is in your
Registy, Change it to like 1 if it's 0 or 0 if it's 1...It's somewhere in the
Explore Policies I believe, To get your stuff back on the start menu, Go into
CMD in the Run Menu, If your Screen Display Dissapears, you might have to
restart, click on a folder of yours, and go to find, type Control Panel or
something that would be in it, Right click on it & select Properties, and
Locate the File Location it's in, Then it will pop up Control Panel or the
Path to it, Make a Shortcut and put it on the Start Menu or Desktop...Once in
control panel, click on the Taskbar and Start Menu Then Click Start Menu,
Next Click Customize and then Advanced...Turn on all you can to get your
Start Menu back up (Make sure run is definitly back up...Next then to Do is
get all the Free Reg cleaners you can get, ;) Go into Safe Mode (Press F8 at
boot) Then Run, CMD.EXE
Locate your User file Location "EX C:\Users\Painless Tragedy"
Followed by \DEL COOKIES This will get rid Temporarly all those Infected
Cookies that keep popping up in IE...Now Restart windows normal, Go to
REGEDIT
I'm no Expert but I think this is the long waited Solution...HKEY_USERS/
5-1-5-21-1547161642-706699826-725345543_1004,  Software, Next Microsoft, Then
Internet Explorer Next Click Main (Okay now the fun part) Change
Default_Search_Url to whatever you like (Right Click & Modify, I made mine
http://www.myspace.com Changed your Start Page and your Search Page to this
as well, I also turned Friendly Http Errors to Off...It sounded Malware like..
.lol To fix time problems Search REGEDIT for the String called Virus Alert
and Change all Locations...Press F3 to Find Next String...I am still working
out the bits and smalls of this, I believe The Virus is called Worm.W32.
Netbooster and AntiSpyware and Spyhunter 3 is Malware Avoid This!!! Adware
2008 and One Care Works best, As for Free Registry Fixers...Highly recommend
Free Registry Fix...Your  Search/Scan is fast and you can open the ones they
don't Auto-Fix for you, just by Double Clicking...Remove all Dll Files,
Suggested by Forums on the worm.w32.netbooster Virus...I hope this
Information is Very Help and is useful to others, Who want Answers!!! I
should Sue C-NETS A$$ for what they have done to my Virgin HP Dv6500 Laptop...
I should have stayed with Vista :( Even though I'm a Gamer Expert and
Musician/Recording Artist - and Vista is sh.t...You all know why, If you
don't Lucky you...I miss the good ol' days when BLACK ICE PROFESSIONAL worked
against all Port Hackers and Warez was Safe and Drivers and Files were Free X
