OE6, last screenshot replaces others when sent

When I send an e-mail with more than one screenshot, they all look OK until I
click Send, when the last image placed in the e-mail replaces all of the
others before it.  I can work around this by putting the screenshots in a
document attachment, but I don't always want to do this, and I recall not
always having had this problem.
PA Bear - 30 Mar 2007 01:48 GMT
Windows version?

1. Tools > Accounts > Mail > [account] > Properties > Advanced > Break apart
messages larger than XX <=uncheck

2. Also try disabling email scanning by your anti-virus application.  It
provides no additional protection, it may be the cause of the problem, and
even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<paste>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Windows XP Home

1. Option was already unchecked. Additionally, the message, in the Sent
Items folder, exhibits the problem, so would it be a function of the account?

2. Cannot be the cause. When I tried prior to my original post, the entire
PC-cillin app had already been exited since earlier today. (I do this because
for some reason the 2006 version of PC-cillin causes pauses between songs on
Launchcast, whereas the 2005 version did not.)

Try #2.  Disabling an AV app's real time protection doesn't always disable
email scanning (which is usually a separate Service), James.

No, I mean I completely exited.  The entire app -- firewall, antivirus,
everything -- is shut down.  (Windows is of course kindly reminding me
periodically that my computer is at risk.)  I've also checked the list of
processes in Task Manager.  All I have running are: alg, CIDAEMON, cisvc,
csrss, CTsvcCDA, dllhost, explorer, iexplore, lsass, msimn, MsPMSPSv,
ntmulti, nvsvc32, services, smss, spoolsv, svchost, System, System Idle
Process, taskmgr (obviously), wanmpsvc, winlogon, wmplayer and wscntfy. The
PC-cillin msconfig startup item is pccguide, which I believe kicks off other
processes that begin with either Pcc or Tm. All of these end when you exit
the suite.

And I mean that completely exiting PC-cillin doesn't necessarily disable
email scanning. Have you checked Services list (Start > Run > services.msc)
and not found Email Scanning running?

With your firewall's and PC-cillin's real time protection disabled, one can
only guess what may have affected the machine, James.  IMHO you should never
be connected to the internet or any networks in this environment.

Re-enable the firewall and PC-cillin, double-check to make sure Email
Scanning is disabled, then try one or more of your accounts in a new Named
Identity (File > Identities > Add new identity).  Assuming the behavior does
not persist, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2) import
messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete the old
one (File > Identities > Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages.  Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline".  More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption.  Disable it.  It provides no additional protection.

PA Bear,

I just checked services.msc. There are 4 items that begin with "Trend Micro"
and 0 that begin with "PC-cillin". The four TM items -- Central Control
Component, Personal Firewall, Proxy Service, and Real-time Service -- are
Automatic but Stopped. Further up the (alphabetical) services.msc list, "DNS
Client" is followed by "Error Reporting Service", so don't know where I might
find "E-mail". (BTW, wouldn't we have seen a process that corresponded to it
in the list of Task Manager running processes I previously provided?)

I realize the risk when I bring down the suite (but thanks anyway on that).
I don't see this is as a "machine" issue. I see it as an OE setting or issue.
Perhaps I was not clear in explaining the problem?

I suppose I could try this Identity suggestion you have provided, but I
would like to note a couple of things in response to the standard OE issue
points:

1) I don't keep messages in the Inbox, and I have a local folder called Sent
Items Storage for my Sent Items.
2) I empty my Deleted Items right after I delete an item.
3) I have SP2 and frequently do the manual compact (although perhaps my
message store is too large).
4) I do not shut down during compacting.
5) E-mail scanning not in effect during current instance of issue.

One would think the problem I am having -- again, perhaps not explained
adequately -- is something someone has previously encountered.

Thanks,
JF

What exactly do you mean by screenshots?
Are you running IE7?

Pressing the PrintScreen key takes a snapshot of whatever is on your screen
at the moment.  Basically it is a copy operation, which I then paste into
Microsoft Word, and then Select All / Copy / Paste into the e-mail body.
Alternatively, you can also use Alt-PrintScreen to take a snapsnot of the
just the active window.

This is the code that was generated when I followed your directions.
Note that the jpgs are located in a Temp folder.

What does your code look like before and after you send ?
Do the jpgs end up with the same file name?

I don't know how to see the code generated, but I went through the directions
again, simultaneously observing changes in the temp folder.

The first step created two files that were two instances of the same image.
The file names were clip_image001 and -002.  The file type of the former was
PNG Image, while that of the latter was Dell Image Expert Picture.  The
folder with these files, and the files themselves, remained unchanged up
until the point when I pasted the second image in the e-mail.  The same two
files were there, but their times changed and the matched image inside them
was now that of the second image.

I sense that you are on to something here.  Am I correct in guessing that
the files for both (i.e. all) images need to still exist at the point when I
click Send?  And what then is the cause of the files being overwritten?

In the message composition window, View, check Source Edit.
Click on the source tab at the bottom of the composition window.

In Windows Explorer or My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, View tab, uncheck
Hide extensions of known file types.
You should have clip_image001.jpg and -002.jpg .

We need to find out if the image file names are the same in the composition
email as in the sent email.
There should be two clip_image jpgs in both emails.

You may need to clean up the temp folder.

The type for clip_image001 is png, the type for clip_image002 is jpg.

The composition e-mail source code after the first paste shows
clip_image002.jpg, and it shows that after the second paste:
____________________________________________________________________________
src="file:///C:\DOCUME~1\JAMESF~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\msohtml1\01\clip_image002.jpg"

width=576 v:shapes="_x0000_i1025"></SPAN></SPAN></DIV></BODY></HTML>
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I return from the Source tab to the Edit tab, the first image has been
replaced by the new contents (the second image) of clip_image002.jpg. So the
effect occurs even before clicking Send. I think the problem must be because
during the paste of the second image, the temp file is overwritten. Note:
While there are several files in the Temp folder, the two clip files were the
only two in the Temp/msohtml1/01 subfolder.

The msohtm1 folder is not generated until the paste is made into the email.
With one Print Screen pasted into Word and then paste into an email,
clip_image001.png and clip_image001.jpg are created.  Both are the same
image.
When I do a second Print Screen into Word and then paste into an email,
clip_image003.png and clip_image004.jpg are created.  Also, the time stamp
on the first Print Screen is changed to the time of the second Print Screen.

I don't know what is going on.
I will not use Word to help create an email, so I don't have this problem.
Word is creating files in the Temp folder.

I pasted both Print Screens into Word, then did one paste into the email.
I had clip_image002.jpg and clip_image004.jpg.

Ah, that's new information.

Try saving the Screen Shots individually as, e.g., JPGs to, e.g., My
Pictures > Now Insert the JPGs into the body of an HTML message or attach
them to a Plain Text message: Does the previous behavior persist?
