kathy - 13 Jul 2007 13:06 GMT For a few weeks now I have been having issues connecting to OE6, but it appears to be becoming more frequent. I use XPSP2 and on start up my OE6 works fine. If I log off and try to connect under my daughter's profile it won't open or if I try to relog under MY profile it won't open. OE6 will only allow me to open on a one shot deal. I need to restart my computer everytime I want to open OE6. The error I get is always the same regardless of user. The connection to the server has failed. Account'mail.optonline.net'Server:'mail.optonline.net'Protocol:POP3,Port110.Secure(SSL):No. Socket Error 10061, Error number 0x800CCC0E If you have any ideas or can point me in the right direction to figure this out I would greatly appreciate it!

Bruce Hagen - 13 Jul 2007 15:16 GMT It could be many things. Your firewall, a bad modem, e-mail scanning, (turn it off).

I also totally turned off Norton for a bit to try that but the problem persists. Maybe the modem?

Also, after you get on successfully the first time, close by File | Exit and Log Off Identity. See if that helps.

When I tried to log out of Outlook as you described, the line for Exit and log off identity will not highlight! Could this be an issue also? btw; I ran a computer analysis program called registry mechanic and that didn't help either. I guess I have a bigger problem on my hands than that can cure.

Bruce Hagen - 14 Jul 2007 02:37 GMT Does this problem persist no matter which identity is opened first, or can you switch identities if you open another first?
I ask because you say that Exit & Log Off Identity is grayed out. This would make me think that you may have a damaged identity.
My canned reply:
You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it. If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old identity and delete it.

All three identities on the computer have that line grayed out. I can not log out from the file drop down, only by clicking on the "X" in the top right corner. It does not matter who is logged on first.

Give that a try. If still no joy, I'll try to get someone else in here with some fresh ideas.

HOWEVER when I tried to move address book and messages it wouldn't move them. I got to the part where is asked me what profile to use and it wouldn't accept the name I created or the name I was coming from. It gave me an invalid name error.

In the new identity: File | Import | Messages. Select Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and Import from the old identity.
For your Address Book:
Open the Address Book in the old identity and File | Export | Address Book (wab) to any place on your HDD that is easy for you. My Documents is fine. Then, open the Address Book in the new identity and File | Import | Address Book (wab) and point to where you saved it.

THANK YOU for everything so far and I hope this is it!!!

I did totally disable Norton for 30 minutes and I still had the problem. I did this immediately, even before the posts started. I am thinking that your idea to create the additional identity may have worked, but I should probably go back now and create additional identities for my two daughters' accounts if that is the case also. If this is not the cure, is there a different email scanning on a computer besides the one on Norton that I should try disabling?

Bruce Hagen - 14 Jul 2007 03:41 GMT I don't personally hate Norton, but Outlook Express does. The new identity may be the fix, but it could have been caused by Norton.
If I were you, I would get rid of Norton completely.
I would suggest either Avast, (freeware), or NOD32, (not free). {I use Avast myself}.
In the case of Avast, choose Custom Installation and under Resident Protection, uncheck: Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange.
Norton, and McAfee, products are not Outlook Express friendly, and I don't know of any OE-MVP that would recommend using them.
Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
NOD32: http://www.eset.com/

I decided to go into my daughter's profile to create an additional identity there, but I couldn't get on! Same problem, same error message. I (we) thought the nightmare was over, but alas, it continues. I will try your last suggestion tomorrow when I have a clear head. Thank you and I'll keep you posted either way. I truly do appreciate your patience and persistance. Your are a godsend by helping me to keep my sanity!!

[quoted text clipped - 64 lines] > >> this > >> out I would greatly appreciate it! kathy - 14 Jul 2007 04:08 GMT I am slow, but persistant. After I couldn't log in, I got rid of the error message and did create an additional profile for my daughter. When I selected this as the profile to go to on start up and tried again it started perfectly! Now I just have to sit down and reread how to transfer the address book and messages from one profile to another and I am in business. Thank you Bruce, you did it!! PS. The person a few threads above me could use this too!!

(I still think you should get rid of Norton).
These may help in your rearranging.
Open the Address Book in the old identity and File | Export | Address Book (wab) to any place on your HDD that is easy for you. My Documents is fine. Then, open the Address Book in the new identity and File | Import | Address Book (wab) and point to where you saved it.

I was able to move the address book from the original identity to the new one, but when I try to do the same from the FILE drop down, it tells me that it will export messages to Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange. I thought I was moving them to OE6 the new identity. Please send a link or directions on how to move all stored and current messages from old identity to new one. I am afraid to try on my own and loose everything!

Bruce Hagen - 15 Jul 2007 02:29 GMT It is really less confusing than the links may appear. Note that when you import, you are not removing anything from the old identity, so if something goes wrong, you haven't lost everything.
For your messages:
In the new identity: File | Import | Messages. Select Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and Import from the old identity.
For your Address Book:
Open the Address Book in the old identity and File | Export | Address Book (wab) to any place on your HDD that is easy for you. My Documents is fine. Then, open the Address Book in the new identity and File | Import | Address Book (wab) and point to where you saved it.

kathy - 16 Jul 2007 04:50 GMT I thought the new identities were the solution, but now after a day I still have the issue where I can log on initially, but OE6 frequently will not connect for other users unless I restart. (It used to be a one shot deal, but now I can get on maybe twice or three times if I am lucky, but after that it still dies on me.) Before I uninstall Norton, (I am hesitant to because I am not familiar with Avast), do you think switching to Outlook instead of OE6 would be a solution or will the same thing happen? Also, is it possible to set up Outlook and move everything (address book and messages) from a profile in OE6 to Outlook. (and is it worth it?) I also noticed quite a few people writing in with the needing to restart issue.

What was the final resolution? I am having identical problems and also set up a new indentity. Still doesn't work.

I installed avast, the free home download and everything works like a charm, knock on wood. I was also having totally different problems on my kids computer, I got rid of Norton, put on avast and that one is purring like a kitten also. It was tough cutting the cord to a product you believe is the best, but the proof is in the result!
