Hotmail links cause OE to shutdown

Steve Hawkins - 25 Oct 2005 16:43 GMT This has been a minor concern for some time, but in case it might at some point cause an error during compaction, can I put it right:
When I first open OE and do a send and receive, I am prompted for the necessary passwords, and am given access to my Hotmail boxes. If I copy mail from these directly into my Local Folders all is well. If, however, I should click on any of the Hotmail boxes after this initial copying OE says it has to close, and promptly does so!
If it did this during a compaction process, disaster would presumably ensue!
Any ideas?

Michael Santovec - 25 Oct 2005 18:26 GMT It's important to know the Details. When you get the "encountered a problem" message, there is usually a "click here" link to see the error report. When you click on the button/link, it will give a message that will list the Appname XXXX and Modname YYYY. The XXXX and YYYY are important to identify the cause and solution. You can ignore the rest of the message.

General OE Caveats:
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose.
- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.
- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).
- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

As it happens, it was a compaction catastrophe that started me reading around OE generally and got me to this forum. I lost half my e-mail - all folders from p-z in alphabetic order now empty - which, from the reading around, I think may be the result of the pc being shut down soon after the prompt to compact came on screen when OE was closed (It is a great shame that this prompt is not accompanied by a suitable warning such as the ones you and others have pointed out!)
Steve Cochran has sent me several links on the subject and I have now installed OETool; OEQB; and, DBXtract.
Others have filled out some background on the compaction process, and I now know that this proceeds by renaming dbxs to dbts and then packing the emls from the dbts into new dbxs. Presumably this process was interrupted after dbxs beginning with 'O' had been repacked, leaving the new dbxs from p-z empty.
The 'empty' p-z dbxs still register as taking up a fair bit of memory (even though DBXTract, and viewing through Notepad finds 'nothing' in them). If they were virgin dbxs only just made in the compaction process, I would have expected them all to register as the same small size so it still seems I have more to learn about this process and about my prospects of recovering any of the lost mail. For instance, where do the dbt files go when they are deleted and why can I not find any in searches ('Search'; GoogleDesktop; or 'Query the Indexing Service).
I now know that XP colours compressed files blue in Windows Explorer, which may explain the existence of new blue 'FoldersBasic.dbx' and 'DraftsBasic.dbx' amongst the mostly black entries in the most recent list of dbxs found by WE (the blue ones are not reflected as box names in the OE tree). Should all compacted files be in blue now and if so does this mean that the ones that are still in black and showing as empty are actually ones that have been compacted into new blue folders which have not yet been brought into use by Folders.dbx, and the ones that are still black and 'full' haven't been arrived at yet, and should themselves be compacted into blue folders?
OE is still prompting me to compact when I shut it. and I am very reluctant to do this until I have exhausted any recovery possibilities. If half my folders are indeed empty and the other half were compacted before the crash, why does it still want to compact anyway? If I did allow it to compact, would it finish some process earlier interrupted and maybe 'find' my 'lost' mail by finishing putting it in the right boxes and sorting out the 'Folders.dbx vs FoldersBasic.dbx' situation.
If you can throw any further light on this I would be most grateful.
Kind regards,
SteveH
Incidentally my virus scanner has deleted netski.zip 4 times and mydoom once while composing this reply!

> OE is still prompting me to compact when I shut it. and I am very > reluctant to do this until I have exhausted any recovery possibilities. AFAIK you can't disable Automatic Compacting (AC) or stop it from running. If you decline the prompt, you're only declining receiving notification of AC so when it's time for AC to run again (every 100 times you close OE), it will run without notice. So chances are, AC has been running anyway.
However, your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File>Identities>Add new identity). Assuming all is well, import messages from the old Identity before deleting it (File>Identities>Manage Identities). (Don't bother importing any Hotmail folders.)
To avoid such corruption in future:
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose.
- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.
- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).
- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
> Incidentally my virus scanner has deleted netski.zip 4 times and mydoom > once while composing this reply! 1. Make sure you're fully patched at Windows Update, Steve.
2. Run a thorough check for hijackware (including posting your HijackThis log to an appropriate forum):
Checking for/Help with Hijackware http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=5878 http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/data/prevention.htm http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/tshoot.html http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm http://defendingyourmachine.blogspot.com/
When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1 (http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post your log to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/, http://castlecops.com/forum67.html or http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

I've now picked up the virus warnings while opening other sites (Eg NetDoctor), and it strikes me that this may be a follow on from disabling virus scanning of e-mail as per following advice on compaction?

Kath Adams - 27 Oct 2005 17:50 GMT That sounds suspiciously as though you have disabled the AV altogether! Try AVG, well recommended and free. It's what I use- as do many other MVP's. http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

Steve Hawkins - 28 Oct 2005 14:13 GMT Thanks Kath,
I have installed AVG to a borrowed laptop to get around problems of remote updating its Sophos as a third party. It is good to hear I was following good advice with AVG and will install it on the pc if the problems persist.

Have run HijackThis and posted the log: to an uneducated eye, it looks quite clean, but results awaited with interest.

Steve, are your time, date and time zone settings correct?
You've got too many related threads going here. Please restrict all further posts to the one with subject "Netsky and Mydoom etc. attacks while using this service". Thanks.

Time settings had been synchronised on the 28th, so I've just rerun them in case there was any confusion in the switch back to gmt.
Cheers, SteveH
