Message deletion and compact: no change in store size

I'm backing up my PC for my move this weekend, and I want to fit my OE 6.0
message store onto one CD-R.  Since its size was 745MB, I deleted several of
the largest e-mails (1-8MB), then compacted (while offline).  I can't
remember the exact steps I've taken, but early on there was no change, while
now it sits at 779MB. (?!)  What am I not doing right here?  I also defragged
just prior to this post, and no change on the 779MB.

Did you empty the Deleted Items folder?
What is the size of the largest dbx file?

Deleted Items empty, as are Inbox and Sent Items, the latter of which is
saved to personal folder "Sent Items Storage" (the largest dbx by twice at
286M).

The folders are empty, but what is their size?

You can put Sent Items Storage on one CD and the rest on another CD.
The dbx files can't be imported from the CD anyway.

Deleted Items is 106M. Inbox is 17M. Sent Items is 24M. I can see where
you're leading me here. Delete these empty DBXs, reclaim the space,
regenerate the default folders?

BTW, I've been backing up the entire store at the "Outlook Express" folder
level.  Shouldn't that work for restoring (if necessary) all the DBXs
simultaneously?  Or should I back up the store from a higher point, say, the
"Identities" level?

My empty Deleted Items is 59 kb.
I am wondering why if you are compacting folders, the files are so big.
Make sure you are in the correct Identity, then delete the files or move
them out of the Store Folder.

Backing up at the Identities level only helps if you are also backing up the
Registry keys, so you can do a clone backup.
Where OE problems are caused by Registry corruption, a backup of the OE
Registry keys aren't useful.

Ron, thanks anyway, see my latest response to PA Bear below, which I posted
at the same moment as your last reply.

One of these days I should really just delete much of it..."one of these
days"...

Did you compact all OE folders per
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact ??

Followed the instructions you provided.  Store folder now 408MB.  I thought
compacting was done by clicking Tools| Options| Maintenance| Clean up Now,
then Compact, but the link you provided said this is only for news folders.
(It would be nice if this was made clear in Options, in the text next to
either the Clean up Now or the Compact buttons.)  In any case, thanks for the
help!

Very good.

Once you move the data to the other machine (or possibly beforehand) you may
want to consider archiving some of the older data elsewhere (e.g., another,
easily identical identity; removable media).  If you do so beforehand,
remember to compact all folders in both identities before backing them up.

Importing OE Data (all DBX files, including Folders.dbx)
http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#importOE5

=> General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages.  Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline".  More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption.  Disable it.  It provides no additional protection.
