I am getting the Subject message after I have moved a few new messages
from the Inbox to their respective storage folders.  I do not use OE for
newsgroups only for mail.  All MS Updates are current and there are no
viruses on my machine.  I store only one month's messages in the Inbox,
and I doubt that there are more than 250 there at any time as I am
regularly moving/deleting them. I also get the following error messages
after moving or deleting a few Inbox messages:

When I try to move a message to its storage folder I may get this
message:

The selected mesage(s)could not be moved.  An error has ocurred.

When I try to display a large storage folder I may get this message:

There are no items in this view.

Small storage folders can still be viewed, but when I try to go back to
the Inbox the above message is displayed.

Exiting Outlook Express and starting it up again clears all of these
problems for a short time. It seems that all of the problems have the
same root cause and they all started about a month ago. One more item:
That is about the time that I switched from using an Administrator
account full time to having a User account.  I made this change by
creating a new Administrator account and then demoting the old user
account to non-administrator status.

I suspect that this problem has been caused by a MS Update as OE has
always worked perfectly in the past.  Hope this information will add a
bit to decoding the problem.

If the "Message could not be displayed" error also says "Out of memory" and
"Low disk space" *and* if the problems go away temporarily after
closing/reopening OE, please tell us!  Otherwise...

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity.  Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File >
Identities > Add new identity).  Assuming all is well, (1) compact all
folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into
the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File > Identities > Manage
Identities).

To avoid such corruption in future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages.  Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline".  More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption.  Disable it.  It provides no additional protection.

@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl:

Thanks for responding to my message.

You said: "If the "Message could not be displayed" error also says "Out
of memory" and "Low disk space" *and* if the problems go away temporarily
after closing/reopening OE, please tell us!"  Yes this is exactly the
situation.

Thanks for the suggestion of a damaged main identity.  I had not thought
of that.

In the "Otherwise..." category you make a number of suggestions that I
have already been doing, and a couple that I have not followed.  From
what I can tell from following the messages about this problem the folks
who have tried all of these things are still experiencing the problem.

The overall size of my e-mail folders is no larger than it has been in
the past and none of the individual folders is larger than in the past,
yet OE worked fine until a month ago. I have not changed the way I
handle, store, delete, empty, compact or anti-virus. However, something
has changed, and it seems to have recently changed for a number of other
OE users also.

I should also mention that my wife's XP machine which also has the latest
MS Updates and which has also been recently switched to a non-
Administrator account for normal activities does not seem to exhibit this
problem.  Her OE e-mail folders are much fewer and smaller than mine. I
say "seem to exhibit" because her volume of messages received is small
enough that if it takes a few deletes or moves to make the problem show
up she might never get to that point before she finishes dealing with her
new messages.  I'll send her a bunch of messages and delete them to check
this out further, and report the results.

My thanks to all who are trying to get this annoying problem resolved.

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup.  Thank you.

Leave you wife's OE out of this, please.  Most OE users are NOT seeing this
behavior AFAIK.

Please review most of the exchange between Gary Brandenburg and me (PA Bear)
in this thread:

If you're sure you're experiencing the exact problem, your not alone.  You
might post a "Me, too!" reply to the thread (for statistical purposes), then
keep your eye on the thread.  If and when a resolution is found, I'll post
about it in a reply to that thread.

Please post any other questions about /your/ issue in replies to this
thread.

One more thing: In my case it seems that the problem is very much an
Inbox problem.  I worked for an hour last night cleaning out old entries
from my Sent folder subfolders with no problems.  Went back to the Inbox,
downloaded the new messages and the problem showed up when I deleted the
second message.

I believe that is all that I can contribute.  I'll watch the Google
Groups thread you suggest below for a solution.  Thanks to all who are
working on this.

Mac, please quote all of the previous post in your replies. Thanks.

How many messages are in your Inbox currently?

What is the size of each of the following files in your message store
(http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain): Inbox.dbx; Folders.dbx;
Sent Items.dbx; and Deleted Items.dbx?

What is the total size of your store folder?

This is exactly what is happening to me...this .just started over the last
month..."Message Could Not Be Displayed"...Out of Memory or Low Disk Space
(Neither of which are true)...Have to back out of Outlook Express and when I
restart my messages are back again (for a while...then the same thing
happens).  My server tells me this is a Microsoft problem and they cannot
help me.  Any thoughts?

I'm getting a similar message. I'm getting "Message has not be downloaded".
Now I know the message has been downloaded, I've read it and it's in my saved
folder. This sometimes happens to new messages in my inbox. A lot of times,
if I close and restart Outlook Express, these messages will be readable. At
other times after I've restarted OE, messages will "disappear" from my inbox,
but will reappear when new messages are downloaded.

You may not have the same problem. Move all your messages that you want to
save out of the Inbox and create a new one. Turn off e-mail scanning and
follow up with a compact.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write
the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Inbox.dbx} and
delete it.  A new one will be created automatically when you open OE.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.
