When I receive photos they are copied as usual in my e-mail, and attached via
paperclip as usual. However, when I open the paperclip to access the photos,
the first one will show O.K., but when I click the arrow for the second photo
I get a series of ads. Is my OE6 corrupted? Do I have a virus? This has
happened only in the past week. Many thanks for any help.

That's a feature of Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (WPFV).  UI presume
that's what is displaying the images.

When you open any attachment within Outlook Express (OE) it saves a
temporary copy in the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files (TIF),
then launches the appropriate program (based on the Windows File
Associations) passing the name of the saved attachment.

Once the WPFV is started, the next and previous buttons will cycle
through any other files in the same folder that it can handle.  The same
thing will happen if you double click any image in any other folder on
your PC.  WPFV will cycle through all the pictures in the folder.

As for the TIF, its primary function is to be a cache of everything that
Internet Explorer (IE) needs to render a web page.  So pretty much
everything IE handles (HTML, images, non-steaming videos, non-streaming
audio, etc.) will get downloaded into the TIF before IE renders it.  It
stays there until it's eventually purged on a first-in-first-out basis.

So once you click the next/prior buttons, you aren't see what came in
the OE message, but rather any recent images that were displayed by IE.

Thanks for your explanation, Mike. However, this is a recent problem so I
assume something has changed. I used to be able to open several photos in
sequence that were attached to my e-mail. Now when I press either the forward
or back arrow to get the next or previous photo, I get a little box with a
header in it. This has never happened before. Does that sound as though my
WPFV is corrupted? I haven't read of anyone else with this problem. I do
appreciate your help. Thank you..........Kim

That's the way WPFV has always worked.

If you were viewing the messages in the OE message itself, rather than
clicking on them, then you would only see attached images.

Or if you were saving the attachments to a folder of your choice and
then double clicking a saved image, you would only see photos in that
folder.

Or perhaps you had some program that was clearing the TIF regularly and
it isn't any more.  Or perhaps you were using another browser and just
recently started using IE.

Thanks, Mike, for your patience and explanation. I do appreciate it.
Apparently I never did try, until recently, to do a slide show with attached
photos. And, as you point out, it doesn't work. I'm very much relieved,
though, that I don't have a virus or corrupted files. Many thanks
again.....take care..........Kim
