I use Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP and also have Outlook 2003 installed.
Outlook IS NOT set up for e-mail. All e-mail is done through OE.
I also use OE to read several newsgroups. If I select REPLY GROUP -- it
pops up an OE window and I can reply without incident.
If I want to reply to someone off group (to their personal address)... it
pops up a window that says:
"A program is trying to access e-mail addresses you have stored in Outlook.
Do you want to allow this? If this is unexpected, you may have a virus and
should click No."
I run Norton System Works 2006 (which includes anti-virus). It is current.
Could I have a virus it is not picking up? Do I have a setting wrong?
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.

Every time Outlook installs an update it takes over as the default mail
program again and you have to reset OE to be the default.
From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/defaultl.htm
Go to Start | Run and type this command, with the double quotes and spaces:
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg
and then make sure that OE is selected as the default mail program in both
IE and OE.
If that isn't enough, see this article:

Do not send email
May I ask why OL's installed if you don't use it for mail?
The above notwithstanding, configure your system per the following:
"Using Outlook 2003 for Mail and Outlook Express for News"
A. Set the defaults to use Outlook Express to access Newsgroups:
1. Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs > Newsgroups > Select Outlook
Express and OK your way out;
2. Do not let Outlook or Outlook Express let themselves set to the default
newsreader:
a. Start Outlook Express to access news. When OE prompts you to make it
your default newsreader the next time you launch it, click the "Don't ask me
again" box and then click the "No" button;
b. Close Outlook Express and start Outlook 2003. When it asks whether
you want to set Outlook as your default mail and news handler choose "No".
Leave Outlook open and continue to the next section.
3. Set the Outlook Toolbar:
a. Choose View > Toolbars> Customize*;
b. Select the Commands tab;
c. From the Categories list select "Go";
d. From the Commands list select "News" and drag & drop it to any place
you want on the Toolbar. The default location is in the "Go" menu.
e. Press Close to return to Outlook.
*Not seeing the News option in Customize? Choose View > Toolbars > Customize
> Toolbars (tab) > Select Menu Bar and press Reset > Start again from #3
above.
B. Start Outlook Express as Newsreader from a shortcut
1. Copy the following line to your clipboard (CTRL+C):
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsonly
2. Right click on an empty area of your Desktop and choose New > Shortcut;
3. Paste the contents of your clipboard (CTRL+V) into the "Type the location
of the item" box;
4. Press Next;
5. Type a name for the shortcut (e.g., Newsreader);
6. Press Finish and your shortcut will be created. You can drag & drop this
shortcut to anywhere you want (e.g., Quick Launch toolbar, Shortcuts section
of the Navigation Pane in Outlook 2003).

I use Outlook for Calendar and Contacts, Notes and Tasks.
I prefer all email through OE as I the majority of email I receive has to do
with newsgroups I freqent, and a couple of organizations I belong to.
I do minimal personal email. However I do a LOT of the other email. And
like not "cluttering" up Outlook with it.
I understand the advantages of having Outlook to email. (I was a MOUS
certified instructor at the expert level for MS Office 2000 suite.)... I
know what it can do.) But this is my personal preference... and it works
for me. (I used to use Outlook for email -- caused several "problems" and I
found it worked better for me to keep it all in OE.
************************
I reset default email in IE -- (even tho I use Mozilla!) -- and that solved
the problem. Thanks Frank and PA for your help.

YW. Just be aware that installing any updates for Outlook will again hijack
your default Mail Client back to Outlook.
Microsoft Outlook updates change the default mail handler to Microsoft
Outlook
