My environment is XP, IE7,OE6. I have been using an old Hotmail account
successfully for years from OE. On a separate computer, same SW, I try to do
the same with a new Hotmail (Live as it is now named) account but
authenticacion fails. After installing kb904942 as recommended all that
happens is a message telling me that free hotmail accounts cannot be
connected. References to the join.msn.com/hotmailplus/overview take me to the
get.live.com/mail/options page which does not clarify the issue. Hotmailplus
does not seem to exist any more (I am not surprised as it once had a price
tag attached). This is really a mess in terms of support. Any idea of how I
should proceed?--
TS
What the redirect was intending is that you get Windows Live Mail. This
is Microsoft's new free mail client and supports Hotmail. It is the
successor for OE (XP) and Windows Mail (Vista).

I am afraid this is not a helpful comment. As stated I have a new Live
Hotmail account. The issue is that it does not work with OE and the
documentation on the support sites seems out of date. I am used to reading
the technical support papers but in this case the ones I have seen offer no
solution. Which is what I am asking for

Just because you could access your other Hotmail account in OE doesn't mean
you'll be able to access the new one in OE, unless you're a (Windows Live)
Hotmail Plus or MSN Premium subscriber. Are you?

The problem is that there is no Hotmail Plus to be found. Perhaps , as
indicated to me by M Santovec, the Live Mail product is the free replacement.
I have not yet tried it. Anyhow M-soft is doing a very poor job in making the
requirements clear to the user. Hotmail in OE differs from any other e-mail
suppliers like Gmail or Yahoo only by the ability to automatically present
the folders chosen. M-soft should encourage this option, not hide it by
ignorance.

Huh? Windows Live Hotmail Plus is the same thing/its new name =>

The error message you got...

Effective late Sept-05, you had to be a Hotmail Plus or MSN Premium
subscriber to be able to access a new account in OE.

A new account, as opposed to the old account which has always worked. Out of
luck. Since about Sept. 2004, Hotmail has not allowed client (MSOE) access
to free accounts, except those which were already being accessed prior to
that date.

It has been thus since Sept., 2004.

Seems very straightforward to me. The button on the left takes you do a
Windows Live Hotmail account sign-up page. The button on the right takes you
to a WindowsInstaller.exe download page. WindowsInstaller.exe will install
as many, or as few of the Windows Live applications as you would like to
use. Windows Live Mail (a stand alone desktop client), Windows Live
Messenger (the Instant Message client), and more.

There is a link just above the list of Windows Live Hotmail features column.
The one with the green check marks.

MSFT has always been weak in the support department. As have the computer
manufacturers, and ISPs; it is all driven by what customers are willing to
pay, and we have driven them to offer less support in exchange for lower
consumer prices. Our fault, really.
Use the Windows Live services button. Download the Windows Live installer.
Pay close attention to the choices it offers. You can have it install just
the Windows Live Mail application, if that is all that you will need. Free
Windows Live Hotmail accounts can be accessed with WLM. Or, if you just want
to pay for Hotmail Plus, click on the "Windows Live Hotmail Plus" link below
the orange "Get it" button on the Windows Live Hotmail side of the page.

The answer was given by Bear but I did not observe it. The page
http://get.live.com/en-us/mailplus/features never appears in the MS links (in
Swedish). No reference at all to HotMail Plus is made from Swedish pages.
Thanks for the explanation of a very peculiar situation, all due to bad mgmt
from MS. I have heard rumours that MS will enable the linkage again for
ordinary Hotmail accounts. There seems to be little value in paying 20 US
dollars to MS to enable the linkage between their products. A gmail, or
similar account, works fine (without folder sync of course). I will stay with
that and not rely on translated MS web pages in the future

Windows Live Hotmail Plus may not be available in your geographic region
yet, Ossian.

If this is the case, which I don´t know, the absence of any information from
MS is no less negligent. Anyhow, thanks for the help. As long as I still have
to pay to have MS allow a connection for its own product I will recommend
other alternatives to my friends and colleagues--
