A sensible fix might be nice.

A well known issue. But what about the millions of people that never used an
Office program like myself and had always needed a third party spell check.
Outlook Express never had one of its own and nobody said boo about that.

Since production of Outlook Express ceased in 2006, there will be no fix.

Didn't OE come with spellcheck anyway?  I've always had Office installed...

I don't care if it's ceased.  They broke, they should fix it.  Or buy me an
owl.

OE never had its own spell check.

OE 6 does not come with it's own spell check. You need Word or an MS Office
program pre 2007. The spell checker in Works 4 through 6 will work with OE,
but not other editions. If you do not have such a program, you can download
a free spell check at one of these sites.

TinySpell:

Maybe we can take up a collection for an owl. <g>

Never.

I have not.

MS Outlook Express was designed by a different team from the one which works
on MS Office. The MSOE team "broke" things by hooking the Office spell
check, rather than creating one of their own. The Office team broke nothing.
