I used to send pdf files in express with no problem, but now whenever I send
one the recipient gets at least six and up to 28 copies of my email and none
of them will open the file - there is just a load of text.

I can send the same files with no problem from my online Sky account - the
problem is only with express.

All other sending and receiving is working normally in express - the problem
is only with pdf files

Can anyone help please?

What Frank said.  Also disable email scanning (outbound and inbound) by your
anti-virus application.  It provides no additional protection, it may be
part of the problem, and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
