Re-download messages left on server?

It struck me, while trying to unblock my sister's mailbox - she not having
ever heard of the 'leave copy on server' tickbox - that I didn't know how
this works...

How does my OE know not to download messages again that are left on the
server?
Is it possible to reset OE to download these messages again should you have
'mislaid' or similar the first downloading?

I'll probably never need to do it, but I feel sure I ought to know if I can!

Cheers,

S

The settings in OE Tools | Accounts | Mail | [account] | Properties |
Advanced | Delivery are "interpreted" by the OE file POP3UIDL.DBX, which is
located in the identity's message store folder
(http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain).

If you (1) close OE, (2) delete POP3UIDL.DBX from the message store, (3)
re-open OE and poll the account, any messages still residing on the
mailserver will be downloaded (again).  NB: You may end up downloading
duplicates of messages that have already downloaded into OE.

Creating a new Identity also creates a new pop3uidl.dll file for the new
Identity.
You can eliminate duplicates and import the remaining messages to the old
Identity.

You can also add a copy of the same mail account without deleting the
pop3uidl.dbx file and that would allow you to download the messages again
within the same Identity.
